D&D (2024) Playtest 8 Spell Discussion

For some reason, there is no verbiage about moving the elemental in the Conjure Elemental spell. That seems like a serious oversight. On the other hand, Conjure Minor Elementals seems to scale extremely well, at 2d8 per level.
On the other hand it's wizards and druids only - and only works at near-melee range. Druids never get multi-attacks and even bladesingers don't really want to be in melee. It would be completely broken in the hands of e.g. warlocks but with the kit it works with is almost certainly fine unless Moon Druids break it.

And this would eliminate the OG version of the spells for those that like them.
That was going to happen no matter how they changed, and they were going to change. Most people found the spells to be obnoxious to play with, which in a communal game is a worse sin than being overpowered (and they were by no means underpowered to begin with).

The Wizard can choose the implement: Wands are popular, but a Poultice (vague component bag) is an option too.
I'm in favour of switching VSM out for VSF and making the spell component pouch an explicit focus. And then cutting the archaic list of components from the spell descriptions (possibly listing them in an appendix page somewhere). I don't recall ever seeing someone tracking material components.

In the spell descriptions, to list the classes is waste of space. It is unnecessary − and is always untrue because subclasses and other features can gain the spells anyway.
It's litterally on the same line as the school. Unless you also delete the spell school, it won't save space.

Which i would not be opposed to but probably won't happen. So might as well leave the class listed too.

I really liked the OG Conjure spells and really hate these new ones.

This is going to be as divisive as the changes to Wild Shape Templates were.

For fans of Conjuration, this sucks, for those that hated it, its great.

I mean at least dump concentration this spells would never get used.

The originals should be eliminated they are annoying at the table. I find the new ones work fine.

We have no clue what the Bard is going to do because everyone approved of them picking their own spell list out of a hat and they reverted that change a packet later.
IMO, make Magical Secrets a level 1 thing that scales.

Learn 1 additonal spell per spell level, these spell can come from any list.

All of the Playtest8 spells lack a Material component.
I wish this was an overall change (and everyone just used focuses), but it's more likely just because all the spell here are...
Conjure variants (with the new design of Conjure Animals as base, and Conjure Animals was V,S already, so)
Healing spells (were V or V,S already)
One cantrip (50/50 on whether they have material components)
