Terrible sequels

This thread isn't about the most disappointing sequel it's about the worst sequel. As disappointing as Godfather 3 was, they managed to tell a cohesive story, most of the acting was fine, and the movie only looks bad in comparison to it's predecessors. Highlander 2 has no redeeming features as the story is nonsensical and it doesn't even work as a so bad it's good movie experience. Sean Connery demonstrated that you can't polish a turd with Highlander 2.
The best part of Highlander 2 is when the director was saying he was screwed by the studio and the film makes sense with their "cut: of it. Made even less sense then.

Zack Snyder has said that there's a "Snyder Cut" of Rebel Moon.

So .... a few questions .....

1. Does Rebel Moon 2 qualify for this thread even though we haven't seen it yet?

2. Is saying that there's a Snyder Cut of Rebel Moon qualify as a promise, or a threat?

3. For the love of all that is holy, can't directors (especially ones that were just given an open checkbook and free rein) just release the actual cut of the movie as, you know, the movie?

I know films were cut before for running time and production costs which digital has largely reduced. I feel like at this point the only reason to have a "directors cut" for a straight to stream film is to try and bank on it again at a later time.

To me the trick is you can't just have a sequel that's "terrible", its too easy. But it must follow a movie that was stupendous, aka the higher the rise the greater the fall.

For example Highlander 2 is a god awful movie, but on the same token highlander one is a good movie, but not a great one. So I don't think it be the worst sequel of all time.
What?!?! The original Highlander is one of the BEST movies from the 80s!!! There's a reason why they keep trying new sequels and remakes, the original film is sublime.

Come on you apes, you wanna live forever? With masterful lines like this, the first movie in the franchise stole my heart. The follow-on movies, not so much. Has Jonny Rico done anything else? For that matter, has any of them?

I posted about this in the "Unpopular Geek Media Opinions" thread, but I support Starship Troopers 2. The issue is that it's a major genre shift from high budget social commentary to low budget horror. But as low budget sci-fi horror goes it's not terrible. Not amazing, but better than a lot of what you'll find.

I can't comment on 3.

Rebel Moon doesn't count, not just because #2 isn't out yet, but . . . the first movie isn't very good.

While Rebel Moon was disappointing . . . Netflix releasing two cuts of the film over time is brilliant, IMO. Well, it would have been, if the movie was any good. There are reasons to keep movies down to about 2 hours, even on streaming services. A lot of folks won't watch films that are too long. And, fantasy/scifi movie fans enjoy seeing extended director cuts of films . . . well, good films anyway. This worked brilliantly for the Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. Not so much for Rebel Moon, but Netflix was trying to build a franchise like LotR.

X2 still stands (despite the director) as one of my favourite Superhero films, so X-Men 3 is definitely a precipitous drop in quality for me.

Amazing Spider-Man 2, I still like Andrew Garfield more than Tobey Maguire and so between ASM2 and Spider-man 3, I think I'll go for this one, although the difference in quality between Maguire's 2nd and 3rd is definitely greater than Garfield's 1st and 2nd.

The Bond movies is another "We'll be here all day" area, but again, using the category biggest drop in quality, Quantum of Solace gets an award here. Brosnan's movies ... nothing ever lives up to Goldeneye, but it's a fairly steady drop through his run.
