D&D (2024) WotC has called the new ruleset 5.2. Why don't we?

I'm mostly opposed to it because WotC got upset and didn't want us to call it 5.5. And when they called it One DND and we started to call it 5.One or 5.1 they got upset and said no don't call it that. So now that we've settled on 5.24 or 5e24 they want to come out with a new branding and call it 5.2.

No. Go away. You had two years to control the brand name, and you didn't want to.
Point of order: 5.2 is not new branding WotC is using for the revised rules. They’re still calling it “the 2024 core rules,” as they have done all along (“One D&D” always referred to the playtest process, not the ruleset, same as the playtest process for the 2015 rules was referred to as “D&D Next”). 5.2 is just the version of the System Reference Document for the 2024 rules.

To add to this, the 2014 SRD was called 5.1

No one has ever called the 2014 rules 5.1e D&D. That’s silly. IMO, calling the 2024 rules 5.2e is equally silly.

Way less silly than "5.5", massively less silly than "5.75", and infinitely less silly than "6E" (especially since it is the 9th typical edition of the Core book line, and there are other editions than those!).

On May 6, Wotc said it would release SRD 5.2. It's the closest thing we have to an "edition" name from WotC, so why don't we just call it 5.2 and rest?
That is the SRD, the current one is 5.1 and no one called 5e 5.1 because of that

Also, as far as I am concerned it was at rest until you started this ;)

I'll call it whatever the community here settles on. This is the only place where I call it anything other than "D&D."
We're not going to settle on it...

I'm a 2024 D&D man. 5.2 is great for the SRD but when others build off of it, what do we call those?

I think, in the end, we're going to have 5e, which includes several different system reference documents: A5e, Black Flag, 5.1 SRD and 5.2 SRD. Games can build off of all of these (with a little trickiness from Black Flag's use of ORC..grrr).

We'll have a whole bunch of 5e compatible actual games like A5e, Tales of the Valiant, 2014 D&D, 2024 D&D, Fateforge, and others.

And we'll have thousands of 5e compatible products that, likely with a little tweaking, can support any of these systems.

So let's be specific and not focus the whole 5e platform on one single game.

Go 2024 D&D.
