D&D (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

I'm about as worried about a zombie apocalypse asi am about some nefarious future that getting books cheaper than expected. Adjusted for inflation, these are great prices, I like what I've seen in previews so it is my choice to pre-order. If they ever start predatory practices I'll reevaluate. As far as DDB, it's worth the cost for me, if it wasn't or becomes too expensive I'll stop paying for it.

This all seems like just one more way to gin up controversy over nothing. All we're missing is a teary eyed video of someone pleading "Who will think of the children!"

It's the fees upon fees upon fees that bother me the most. Like, yes: I can pay a small monthly fee to set up Spotify. But without a monthly cell phone contract, I can't access it. And without a monthly internet access fee, I'll burn through my data plan in just a few hours. And...etc.

Music isn't bad at all (although I do Apple Music) but the streaming services for TV and film?

Yeah, I feel you. Unless you subscribe and unsubscribe regularly (which I've been doing) it's a killer.

And I hate that every service is trying to get into the subscription model. Cars? Seriously? I bought the car, now go away.

So, in this scenario, what's the incentive to create anything, when Disney or some other big corporation can swoop in, take it for themselves and sell it with much better production values and distribution than you could ever manage?

Because you WANT to create. It takes money out of it as a driver ... or at least significantly reduces the draw.

People would make D&D content because they want to advance the game.

Disney could take what you made and market it themselves, but then you could take what they make and market it yourself and they couldn't take you to court and force you to stop just because they have better lawyers.

So one thing I am curious about is the gold dragon mini for the 3d VTT. Have they given any indication about how these 3d minis will be available? The last I had remembered them saying, they were still trying to figure out what pricing for the VTT might look like.

I have no idea what you do for a living, but I'm assuming based on your post that you'll have no problem doing it for me for free. Please DM me your resume so I know what skills I'm about to have free access to.

I am an engineer, analyst and weapon systems expert. From my POV, people are welcome to copy my techniques and my knowledge is free (if you have access to it). My labor is what is not free.

To put this in perspective, if you want me to design a modification to a guidance and control system or to tell you how to fuze a missile warhead to kill the maximum number of people in a certain situation you will need to pay me to do that. If you want to take what I have done previously and apply it to your own system or if you want to pay someone else to do it base do it based on my previous work then have at it!

It should be the same with an artist - if you want ME to make you a piece of artwork you should have to pay me to make it. If you want to copy it from something I did previously or you want to pay someone else to copy it you should be able to.

This mindset is the root of the problem though - WOTC is allowed to monetize because they own the ideas and content.

I assume there will be basic minis, and you can pay for bonus ones. It's nothing I ever plan on using anyway, but I don't begrudge them options for making a profit. Somebody has to pay the developers.
