Would it help to have an option that prevented notifications for new accounts for a predetermined probationary window? "Don't notify of new threads created for one week."

Or you could restrict someone to have to post only comments for a given period before they can start a new thread. That’s a common type of restriction. And they have to post a certain number of comments too before they can start one.

A lot of people join forums because they want to post a question. And it's easy for spammers to write a script that posts a few comments.

Unfortunately, many "fixes" for spam can make the user experience worse while being only a mild inconvenience for the spammers.

Yeah, I saw a couple this morning in my feed. They are like roaches, these spambots.
Yeah, it's annoying. I report them, and the account, and then ignore it so I don't have to see them anymore.

I just hope we're not blowing up the report system every time one comes around and accidentally making things worse for the mods.

Since I see them in my Feedly, I would have to click through to report each one, and that takes too much time. Plus, I don’t want to actually land on those posts. It’s bad enough seeing the Titles.
