and decided to throw the OGL in there to distract the designers from their actual work
That hurt but they never have the time to playtesf at all.

Even the designers underestimated how united the base was and wasted what little time they had.

I also don't trust any person who says that things were rushed and that's why the game is bad... because almost inevitably the kind of game they think is great is the one I think blows. So their opinion of good or bad is strictly just that... their opinion.

it might very well be rushed, but I would not expect a less rushed version to be drastically different, maybe better balanced, some fewer errata, stuff like that, but not a drastically different game

They would not have turned this into Shadowdark or 4e, if only they had 6 more months

Mist editions are designed over 3 years. Revisions take around two years.

4E was mostly designed over two years. It's obvious they missed a bit in the 4E phb.
