D&D (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

Again, assuming it was balanced before with concentration then taking concentration away and keeping at d6 will still be much stronger, which means unbalanced if balanced before.
I think the capstone is bad. So removing concentration at level 20 seems balanced enough compared to the monk or barbarian or fighter capstone (which increases base damage by 1/3)
If it wasn’t balanced before then show it wasn’t first.

I specifically answered to your post before and did the math. Maybe it is your turn to read it.

It's good if you just want to deal damage.
And before that I'd allow casting on tracks. (maybe at level 9) That is a cool feature. Now the ranger is great at tracking.
But yes the math is fine.
Up until level 19 I agree.
I think most people are missing the fact that it stacks with advantage, including the extra crits you would get from that.
I don't miss that. I still think it is a bit meh. At best you get +10 damage comoared to before, with a chance on a crit to make it +2 more per crit compared to 1d6 hunter's mark.

With 5 attacks at most with advantage, we speak about +1 damage on average.

So the increase is +11 damage IF you use hunter's mark in rounds where you don't have to cast or transfer it.

That is not very great.

Now if the ranger gor their level 13 and 17 features together with their 1d10 increase at level 20, it would be quite some goodie. (And I bet there would have been fewer complains...), but the increase to 1d10 is meh.

Of course treantmonk just told us that the 3d6 more damage (average 10.5) from true strike make rogues comparable in damage to the monk... So increasing damage by 11 on level 20 might be in line.

But still it feels too restricitive.
This is why I'd rather have concentration free d6 always on hunter's mark, so now the ranger at level 20 feels "unchained".

Level 1
Choose either to be a Hunter or Trapper. Your choice gives you additional features at levels 10, 17, and 20
Hunter: you get Hunter's Mark (as written)
Trapper: you get Ensnaring Stike.

1: you can cast Ensnaring Stike extra times without expending a spell slot.
10: Ensnaring Stike can target Huge creatures.
17: The target of your Ensnaring Strike has disadvantage on their first save.
20: Ensnaring Strike can target any sized creature. They also can not teleport.

Nice. IMHO.
But people will say it costs you a bonus action and concentration. So they won't be satisfied.

Option 3: Beast hugger.
Level 1: Animal friendship.
Level 10 should read level 13: you can affect monstrosities
Level 17: you can also affect Abberations
Level 20: you can also affect dragons.

It’s not about the capstone. It’s the whole package.

Sorry. Totally missed that post.

Thanks.

Further the original AD&D 1E Magic-User class included both Wizards and Sorcerers.
It did?! I mean, it had them as class-level titles, but I sure don't recall there being functionally different Wizards and Sorcerers.

Also at level 10 you had to be raising/speaking with the dead because your title was Necromancer. Send those minions to that graveyard!
