So yesterday I did a marathon re-watch of the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. I think they were somewhat better and worse than I remembered in different ways. I also noticed that Chloe Dykstra was in the train scene when watching the credits (she is the daughter of ILM veteran John Dykstra, a key player in the creation of lightsabers, for those who do not know). But that is tangential, as is the fact I had forgotten 3 had Gwen Stacy, played by Bryce Dallas Howard.
In any case in light of Spider-Man: No Way Home I would really rather like to see a Spider-Man 4. I am pretty sure I am not alone in that. But I would actually like to see a Spider-Man 4 where Mary Jane is the protagonist and Peter is the deuteragonist. Because I would really like the movie to elevate her character and "redeem" her in the way No Way Home did for Tobey, Andrew, and their villains. My desire for this is almost certainly strongly affected by the fact that I watched Civil War on Friday. No, not Captain America: Civil War. The other one, with Kirsten Dunst, : D . I think Mary Jane in the trilogy was a deeper character than the naughty word Facebook memes usually portray her as. But it would be nice to see Dunst, who has grown into a great actress, make a middle-aged Mary Jane shine.
I would of course like to see Mayday Parker in this movie too, but I think it would be really appropriate for the times if they could make Mary Jane into more than just a Spider-Mom and Spider-Wife without having to giver her Spider-Powers. I mean one of the things that happens in the trilogy is that when Peter keeps saying that they cannot be together because it would place her in danger Mary Jane tells him that he deserves to have someone save him too. The foundation is there. We also are in a spot where roles for 40-something women start to dry up. Kirsten Dunst is on the younger end of that range still, but I think it a movie with her as the lead could make a statement for that as well.
I have no idea who the ideal villain for this would be. I think I would make it a singular villain though, or at least singular supervillain, because both Mary Jane and Peter need to maximize their screen time rather than have it diluted by too many other pov characters. Especially if it is still actually titled "Spider-Man 4" it needs to, you know, have a full Spider-Man subplot.
I imagine some stuffed suits might balk at having another female led Spider-movie after the crapshoot that was Madame Web but I would point out that the one good thing about that movie was seeing young Ben and Mary Parker.
