I Want Spider-Man 4

So yesterday I did a marathon re-watch of the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. I think they were somewhat better and worse than I remembered in different ways. I also noticed that Chloe Dykstra was in the train scene when watching the credits (she is the daughter of ILM veteran John Dykstra, a key player in the creation of lightsabers, for those who do not know). But that is tangential, as is the fact I had forgotten 3 had Gwen Stacy, played by Bryce Dallas Howard.

In any case in light of Spider-Man: No Way Home I would really rather like to see a Spider-Man 4. I am pretty sure I am not alone in that. But I would actually like to see a Spider-Man 4 where Mary Jane is the protagonist and Peter is the deuteragonist. Because I would really like the movie to elevate her character and "redeem" her in the way No Way Home did for Tobey, Andrew, and their villains. My desire for this is almost certainly strongly affected by the fact that I watched Civil War on Friday. No, not Captain America: Civil War. The other one, with Kirsten Dunst, : D . I think Mary Jane in the trilogy was a deeper character than the naughty word Facebook memes usually portray her as. But it would be nice to see Dunst, who has grown into a great actress, make a middle-aged Mary Jane shine.

I would of course like to see Mayday Parker in this movie too, but I think it would be really appropriate for the times if they could make Mary Jane into more than just a Spider-Mom and Spider-Wife without having to giver her Spider-Powers. I mean one of the things that happens in the trilogy is that when Peter keeps saying that they cannot be together because it would place her in danger Mary Jane tells him that he deserves to have someone save him too. The foundation is there. We also are in a spot where roles for 40-something women start to dry up. Kirsten Dunst is on the younger end of that range still, but I think it a movie with her as the lead could make a statement for that as well.

I have no idea who the ideal villain for this would be. I think I would make it a singular villain though, or at least singular supervillain, because both Mary Jane and Peter need to maximize their screen time rather than have it diluted by too many other pov characters. Especially if it is still actually titled "Spider-Man 4" it needs to, you know, have a full Spider-Man subplot.

I imagine some stuffed suits might balk at having another female led Spider-movie after the crapshoot that was Madame Web but I would point out that the one good thing about that movie was seeing young Ben and Mary Parker.

They are too old for this, and the new spiderman movies are what are going to be hot.

IF they did do a continuation of those 2000 era movies, if you want a stronger Mary Jane, do the follow-ups they did with Spiderman and their daughter (Gwen? I think it is) as she comes to have spider powers. It's found in Amazing Spiderman: Renew your Vows.

I'd watch a Spidey 4 with Tobey and Dunst. The only thing I'd worry would be the script. Hollywood of late have revealed how utterly terrible they can be...

I think after 17 years too much time has passed. While No Way Home was good and successfully brought back Tobey and Andrew as their respective Spider-Men, I don't think this is what the audience wants, especially one that centers on MJ more than Spider-Man. I'd guess people want Tom Hollands continuation of the MCU films. Two recent movies come to mind, Indy 4 and Beverly Hills Cop 4. Both were in development for a long time before they finally got a decent script and the movies got made. They were good, but not great. The one thing they both had going for them was that there were no other iterations of the characters in between, such as Chris Pratt playing Indy or Chris Tucker playing Axel Foley, this can't be said for Spider-Man. Then there's always the chance that a fourth Raimi film might risk tarnishing the legacy of first trilogy, and let's face it, Spider-Man 3 was pretty bad in parts. Even if everyone involved, Raimi, Tobey and Kirsten wanted to do it, which is probably a big if, by the time its greenlit with a script, and the 3 aforementioned schedules clear it'd probably be another 5-7 years before it hit theaters. I think it's best to just leave it as is.

I like the Spider-Man movies but would not want to have him second-fiddle. The movie is about him and his struggles and coming to terms with his powers. MJ is there to give light to his flaws and him having to make choices. She is not the hero.

A MJ spin-off movie where she does not have powers could work but likely not sell.

I did read an interview with Dunst recently who said all the roles she is offered now are, "sad mom"...

I'd like to see a Spidergirl starring a teenaged May Parker, with McGuire in a wheelchair.

There is an alternate timeline in which Gwen Stacy becomes the one with spider-powers (officially she's Spider-Woman, but she's often called "Spider-Gwen" by fans), but not one I know of in which his kid is named Gwen. In various timelines there's Mayday, a couple of Benjamins, Annie May, Claire, and May. But no Gwen.
