Niko? I have no memory of that character. And if they're just adding one: this isn't AD&D, you don't need to have a cleric. Especially if you're going to have a woman cleric make her one of the exciting 5e clerical types, not a life cleric which smacks of the 80's "girlfriend role" of "oh, she can play the healer".

No, I'm not blaming WotC, this isn't that bandwagon. Just wish if they weren't going to stay to the traditional cast and added a character in modern times, that it would show off some modern sensibilities of the game that weren't around in 1983.

Isn't the Life cleric the one that's available with the free rules?

From the adventure's introduction: "Accompanying the adventure are character sheets for six of the animated series’ protagonists: Bobby, Diana, Eric, Hank, Presto, and Sheila, all presented in young adulthood. The seventh character sheet presents Niko, a Cleric from a different set of adventurers who recently tumbled into the D&D multiverse." [my emphasis]

Not only that, but she's also the token generic Asian girl.

Although she isn't given a name, it seems like Niko's first appearance was in the 2022 Dragons of Stormwreck Isle miniatures set.

I can't speak to the stats, but my guess re: the backgrounds is that those are just the ones that fit the best mechanically. I mean, these are characters who got lost in the D&D world as kids. They technically shouldn't have any job-oriented background.

Maybe in this instance, Eric's noble background is meant to portray that he comes from a wealthy family, whereas Bobby and Sheila come from a poorer family? Diana and Presto being scribes indicates they were academically inclined middle class kids maybe? Not sure what Hank's guard background could be, though.

Not sure why but the episode of the cartoon I most remember is Child of the Stargazer where Diana reveals that her father(?) is an astronomer (ie she fits the prophecy)- giving her the Scribe background to reflect her stargazer background is a nice nod, it would be sad if it was just a fluke chosen for mechanics

No idea. As I said above, none of the characters come with any backstory or personality traits or anything. Just a name and a picture and the game mechanics.

Well, thet allows them to work as pregens for people without nostalgia for the show, or running it in Greyhawk as suggested in the text, say.

Sure. Not saying it's a bad thing. Just letting people know that there is literally nothing there. Each PC's background is literally just a word on the page. There isn't even an indication of which skill proficiencies or feats were granted by their backgrounds, or which ability scores were modified.
