D&D General Dad’s Army and 5e

Now there’s a subject line I never thought would make sense.

I was looking through Quests from the Infinite Staircase and noticed the gnome captain in “When a Star Falls” is called Captain Mainwaring.

Given this is from the old TSR UK module I have to assume this is a direct reference to Dad’s Army, a (now obscure) UK comedy from the 70’s.

I just thought it was neat. I might be the only person on the planet who thinks so.

The character also appeared in the Acq Inc play-through at Gencon (though Chris Perkins didn’t get the “obscure British pronounciation” memo that it’s pronounced “mannering”, because why would he?)

Anyway.. obscurity upon obscurity. I wonder how many other direct pulls like that exist in the older modules.

Like most comedy from the 70s, some parts have aged heavily. For me, it’s the premise and characters that made it a classic more than the “humor”.

A bunch of over-the-hill locals (or feeble/shady if they’re younger) locals in the territorial army defending a small coastal town from Nazis. In gaming terms, each character is ripe for reuse as an NPC archetype.

I remember Dad's Army lol. Prime time here in the 80s.

"Who do you think you're kidding Mr......"

One grand dad was to young for the 1st one to old for the second but ended up in the home guard.

What we need now is a module named Tascquemaester where five adventurers go into a dungeon looking for a golden head-shaped idol... featuring a goliath named Gragdafis and a gnome named Little Aleksorne. ;)

Have you seen Season 2 of NZ Taskmaster?

If you can find it it's utterly brilliant (our knock off shows tend to suck badly).

Possibly the greatest season of TM ever.

The Australian one isn't to bad either.

I've seen one of the guys live and he has been known to get completely naked on stage and it goes downhill from there.
