I came close to putting this on my list. The Fog
My "aunt's" brother was cinematographer on this one. He passed away a year or two ago.Return of the Living Dead, maybe campy, though also has some of the most scary zombies, as they can't be stopped.

I knew the movie, originaly, as Twinkle, Twinkle, "Killer" Kane. The fight scene stuck with me.Heads up it is very strange. It originated from Blatty's earlier period of writing comedy. It was originally a story called Twinkle, Twinkle "Killer" Kane, but he updated it after he wrote the exorcist into a book called The Ninth Configuration, which he then got made as a movie and directed. Scott Wilson and Stacy Keach are in it and both excellent. It still has many of those comedic elements, but they come off surreal as the subject matter is quite dark.
These, recently, landed on my radar after watching a couple of YouTube videos covering the 100 best horror movies, the 100 highest rated letterboxd horror movies, and the 75 scariest horror movies,Midsommar.

I think reaction to the Exorcist is very different depending on if your world view causes you to find it believable or complete baloney.I disagree that The Exorcist is overrated having recently seen the reactions of some people watching it for the first time. They didn't faint or vomit, but they had strong reactions to several scenes that I could not help but place it in my top 10.
I find a lot of those horror movies that use Catholicism as its underpinnings hit harder amongst those who were raised Catholic.I think reaction to the Exorcist is very different depending on if your world view causes you to find it believable or complete baloney.

This I believe in... I believe in death. I believe in disease. I believe in injustice and inhumanity, torture and anger and hate... I believe in murder. I believe in pain. I believe in cruelty and infidelity. I believe in slime and stink and every crawling, putrid thing... every possible ugliness and corruption, you son of a bitch. I believe... in you.
I introduced it to a friend recently, and the hospital scenes pushed him to leave the room, although some of that was personal resonance.I disagree that The Exorcist is overrated having recently seen the reactions of some people watching it for the first time.
