D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

You wouldn't lose much if you took out arcane Bards from DS 4e, since I believe that the Athasian Minstrel was a theme. I don't have my books on hand, and I can't recall how some of these other arcane classes were handled.
They were allowed and could choose to defile for more power.

Which worked because 4e had so many classes. 5e doesn't. So, removing a huge swath of them limits you to only a few options. Which is why Dark Sun would either need to loosen up on restrictions OR add a metric ton of new ones to replace what's lost.

i mean removing clerics & paladins would still leave 11 official classes in 5e... also even in 4E elemental priests existed. I really don't understand the issue either way. A few grognards will complain? Oh well.

By that metric, we can just have all 13 PHB classes available. A few grognards will complain, but oh well...

I mean that's also fine by me. Honestly the only class I outright restricted in my conversion was Sorcerers because all the bloodlines are not really a thing on athas.

It's not a few. Recent survey on major Darksun sites only 4% were using 4E.

2E take still the most popular with significant numbers of 3E.

Handful of 4E fan made material most of it old. Still new releases of 2E and 3E material. No demand and no one to produce it anyway.

ENworlds an echo chamber. The biggest fan sites, Facebook groups aka the active fans 4E is not well regarded.

Similar to 4E FR being actively disliked to the extent they retconned it away.

Very few are fanatical purists but they're not fans of the muke it approach either.

As I said before, 4E is easily the most difficult edition to make & utilize content for. People aren't avoiding 4E Dark Sun because it's a bad conversion but because it's 4E. Also 4E didn't muke Dark Sun... it just rewound to right after Kalak's defeat. Like how Eberron always rewinds to the end of the Last War.

Which is a reason why a Dark Sun-like game IMO works better with 3pp where there are more options.

I'm not sure Eberron ever had a need to rewind, but it never moves forward.

This almost feels a bit like a population map. Most people aren't playing 4e. 4e was a controversial edition overall. And yet we should be shocked when only 4% were using 4e for Dark Sun? Not surprised really. Can't say that I care though you clearly want us to believe that 4e Dark Sun is the worst. We know how you feel about it. Do you have anything productive to add to this conversation or do you plan on just posting more malcontent about 4e?

What that says to me is the fan community is too stuck in the past to ever allow even something like OP's suggestion to ever work. The idea of a Dark Sun where PCs can make things better? Blasphemy! Hersey! You will die in the desert and you will LIKE IT!
