Why would you start with one rather than designing both in conjunction with each other?IMO, if you start with narrative elements and then design gameplay to match, a lot of that problem goes away.
The idea that the game only supports players within a narrow band of tastes is very, very silly. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it could be better, particularly if they wanted to support players with different tastes who all love D&D.
That would probably be ideal. Certainly better IMO than starting with the mechanics you want to throw at the PCs.Why would you start with one rather than designing both in conjunction with each other?
I didn't say it was narrow. Read my post. I said it could be better. The idea that the game only supports players within a narrow band of tastes is very, very silly.
As opposed to the claw doing 2d6+8 slashing and the bite doing 2d8+8 Piercing? Those are so different?it does that, as long as you do not care that whatever you describe has the same outcome
I'm pretty sure that they ARE designed exactly as you describe would be ideal. You just don't like the results. That would probably be ideal. Certainly better IMO than starting with the mechanics you want to throw at the PCs.
that is why I had no issue with that being combined for the Lion (back when this first came up), for dragons it has different reach and different damage, not just damage typeAs opposed to the claw doing 2d6+8 slashing and the bite doing 2d8+8 Piercing? Those are so different?
that is what Rend does thoughLook, I agree thar the line is drawn somewhere. I too would not prefer monsters to have attacks that say "melee: +4; 10 damage. Range: +5; 6 damage. Narrate!
because I want it to make sense, not just some BS I have to invent to excuse its existenceI haven't seen that green dragon block in a long time. I can't remember the miasma attack. Why would it be hard to narrate?
there isn't another one to my knowledge, what are you thinking of? Because someone claimed it is 4e-ish? I could not care less about that. I have no experience with 4e, I assume it would not have been for me, I assume it was a good system regardless. I've been using Bloodied for a while nowAre you sure that there isn't some other reason that you don't like it?
It always baffles me to see people playing a game of imagination complaining that they have to use their imagination during the game.because I want it to make sense, not just some BS I have to invent to excuse its existence
When did that happen? Which edition? But wouldn't it be better if a hill giant smacking a halfling did send them hurtling across the room?
