If they're serious about maintaining compatibility between 5th edition and 5.24, they need to do this. It's not an update of the PDK/Banneret but a whole replacement with entirely different theming and abilities.
They renamed some other subclasses (totem barbarian).
And complete rewote others (element monk).

Also, while I still really want a leadership subclass (that doesn't suck). I also want a dragon rider, and Dragon Knight sounds a lot more like it should have a dragon than be a leader.

This - and the old PDK could definitely do with Elements Monk, GOOlock, or Feylock level help.

Your suggestion to open the class to more Dragon ancestries, but keep the FR name "Purple Dragon Knight" for the name of the faction with its lore, is solid.

My wife has an 11th level PDK and is happy with it. She wanted a simple character, and Barbarian had too many decision points (Rage? No rage? Reckless? No reckless?). It's more versatile than Champion, but without a lot of complexity. The 3rd, 7th, and 10th level abilities are all good. Not hugely optimized, but good.

If WOTC is going to do total class rewrites under the same name, that's just going to create even more confusion for the non-book-savvy players. I'm already having to steer people away from Beyond because of the content mixing.

So...

Dragon Knight that rides dragons.
And Banneret as a leader subclass (which needs a glow up).

Sounds perfect to me.
