The D&D seeped in magic train left four editions ago.

There's nothing overly fantastical, certainly not to the level of Wuxia or anything remotely like that, in the baseline Fighter, for many many levels.

Which is the point of contention here.

Some want a basic, 'mundane' Fighter. Heck, some want a Ranger that has no Spells! Others, want to be flying around based only on their somehow not-magic yet clearly magical abilities.

That circle cannot be squared.

I mean, 3e had The Book of Nine Swords and 4e had the only nonmagical ranger. I would still argue that super magical worlds have been a thing since 2e.

But I agree. You can't have a game that is both low magic and high magic and keep a semblance of balance. Which is why I think WotC is wise for giving up on low magic and leaving that to 3pp.

Point of order: as far back as 1e AD&D, your high level fighter (and probably the fighting-man in OD&D, but I'm not that old) got a lot of his power from the magical equipment that he carried.

Widespread magic has always, ALWAYS been a part of D&D. Maybe not innate to your fighter-ness, but ABSOLUTELY an expected part of your character.

My AC: -8 fighter slowly puts his rod of lordly might behind his back, hoping you also don't notice his belt of giant strength or the goat figurines out back...

the concept was stated in sage advice, and it applies to martials due to martials being part of the entire world which has said magic in it, i know you've had this explained to you before micah, i was in those discussions.
Ok. I don't buy into Sage Advice. It's not the book, and Crawford's work in this area is unreliable.

You can have a simple mundane fighter.

The problem is that you have to increase its ability and prowess to match that in order for it to fight demons.

An epic martial must of 2 of 3

  1. Complex mechanics
  2. Innate magic or special bloodline
  3. Magical or high tech gear
