D&D 5E 2024 D&D is 2014 D&D with 4E sprinkled on top

Part of what happens in these arguments time and time again is that nobody is defining what the upper level of these mythic martials can do. We get vague allusions to characters with different abilities, but no real limits.

* On the lower end, you have Hawkeye. Peak human athlete, expert marksman, Avenger. But nearly all his abilities are within human bounds. The 5e martials I feel capture that level well.

* Then you have Captain America. Super soldier via serum. Above human peak, but not overly so. He's stronger, faster, more durable, and has enhanced senses. Still, he's not breaking the laws of physics with his abilities, but he bends them ever so slightly.

* At the high end, you have Superman. Alien powered by the sun. Impossibly strong. Resistant to most normal weapons. X-ray vision, hearing across the world. Flight. Super speed. Frost breath, heat vision. Cunning intellect. So far above mortals he can be likened to a God.

Clearly, there are other layers in between, this is not an all the nothing, but it kinda defines the low, middle, and high.

Where do we put the epic fighter? For some, Hawkeye is the limit. Others it's Cap. Still more want something closer to Superman. You can't build a class that appeases Hawkeye people if they are getting Superman, and vice versa. So when someone says "I don't want Superman, I want Captain America" and people respond with "Why do you want fighters to not even be Hawkeye?" communication breaks down.

Honestly, until someone takes the time to concretely lay down WHAT the limits are and what that epic fighter is doing, this argument is pointless.
i would maybe need to chip off some of superman's various powers like flight, X-ray vision, eye beams and frost breath (and the reliance on sunlight) before calling them an example of a martial, but otherwise yes, that is what i would want the epic 20th level fighter to be in the ballpark of,

(edit: and given this is DnD i'd expect them to have equivalent levels of skill with tools and weaponry)

I just noticed that AFAICT, by RAW a character in 5e can never long jump more than 20 feet (STR capped at 20, right?)

The real human world record is close to 30 feet.

Whatever, 5e.

If SUPERMAN is the bar, then this just doesnt work.

Captain America at level 20? Sure. Superman??

Thats so far beyond the bounds of what a 'mundane' Martial should be doing.

I mean, vintage 30s Superman is akin Captain America, maybe a little more powerful/invulnerable.

He's also an alien, which wasn't off the table in your list. 😉

captain america is so SO far behind being anywhere near the martial equivalent of a 20th level caster though it's ridiculous! archwizard magnificus rocks up with the capabilities of Gate, Meteor Swarm, Shapechange, Time Stop and Wish and we're meant to believe cap stands on equal footing with that guy? I would barely average him as an 8th level character in DnD, how do you claim with a straight face that cap is a 20th level character?

i really don't appreciate the smarm and would appreciate if you just didn't

That's just the way it works. A mundane martial is not going to wave his hand and stop time, open the gates of heaven, or transport his party to the Hells.

Gear, and Damage through laying a beating on the enemy is what a pure martial can do.

If a level 20 martial needs time stop, it's cool, we are just talking different games.

Make a mythic fighter instead.

no, why shouldn't a mundane martial be able to go toe-to-toe with gods, demons and eldritch abominations and come out victorious? they manage to in stories, they have in previous editions even! and if people want to play those kinds of characters then they should be able to.

They can. That's my point. Get in the gear, get leveled up, get your party, and go lay a beating on the Big Bad. That's the martials purpose.

Get buffed, swing a mighty sword, and hit things.
