How about a spirits-oriented "primal" caster. E.g., Witch Doctor, Shaman, etc.

Or is that considered culturally insensitive now?
The core idea is fine, I think. It's just what sort of trappings are put on it.

Kelsey so far seems to know how to avoid caricaturing real-life cultures -- the Basilisk Warrior from the upcoming River of Night issue of Cursed Scrolls isn't anything like any existing culture I know about, while still being coded as not European, which I think is probably the right balance to strike.
 

Nope. Outside of the mind flayers brain eaters, there's no real presence of psionics in the game at this time. I could definitely see her going for a psion ahead of a 5E sorcerer.
Not yet. If she doesnt go that path, I'm going to get mine out there though.
Even a halfway decent Psion, which would be better than anything WotC did for psionics in 5e, would get me to highly consider Shadowdark.
