D&D 5E Medieval Plastic Surgery At Its Best

Chryssa De Antoni—or the Coiled Sculptress (CR 11) as she’s now known—is a talented medusa that burrowed her way into the criminal underground. She turns her customers to stone and resculpts their faces, carefully chiseling away their old identities before using her unique magical gifts to restore them, turning her artistry into flesh and blood. Hers is not a profession of kindness however, and the foolish customers that don’t say the right passwords or pay the right amounts become raw materials for Chryssa’s less traditional masterpieces (doomed forever more as a CR 2 Fleshsculpt). Delicately designed by Andrew Engelbrite, illustrated by Leonardo Sa.

EN5ider Goes Monthly Soon!

This year EN5ider celebrates a decade of publishing some of 5E’s most creative and engaging articles. We've published over 600 issues! We are proud to have reached this milestone and thankful for everyone who’s contributed to that, whether they be patrons, designers, or artists. This moment is more than an opportunity to recognize a worthwhile accomplishment however—it is also an opportunity to change and evolve.

With that in mind we are excited to announce that starting in April 2025 that EN5ider is changing into a full magazine format! Every month we’re releasing a single issue that combines all of the posts and articles into one. Get the first entry into this new age of EN5ider with EN5ider Magazine #1: Folk Heroes in April!

This would not work, as they are stone all the way through she could shave off a bit of skin but would cut into the underlayers after a bit. Turning back to the flesh would cause the missing parts to bleed out or if carved into deep hurt muscles or bones make limbs and other parts useless and severe pain and trauma. But hay it is a made-up game so do what you like, doesn't have to make sense I mean just remove the head and you could just be a living head with no body by this logic, lol
Just curious, when you claim it won't work have you read the full article where they flesh out "her unique magical gifts to restore them" and disagreeing with what they wrote, or are you just making a blanket statement that there is no way that magic could accomplish this even explicitly knowing it's not just Stone to Flesh?

Medusa turns flesh to stone just like the spell and was the reason for the reverse as well, are you saying this is not that affect and in that case, the Medusa has some odd variation of this ability? If this is the case then it is just a way for them to make this specific character, if this is the case fine then happy i didn't pay money for the article.

If you read the first paragraph of what was posted, you'd know what you put above is incorrect that it's just 'the reason for the reverse as well'. It's explicitly listed that it's a unique magical gift. I even quoted it.

If creatures having unique abilities makes you happy not to have paid for the article, well, that's your choice. I personally tend to enjoy having more than just what my players have read at my fingertips. Give them doses of wonder and the fantastical. Or even just the unexpected.

not saying that, just saying as a dm i can just make or say it does this my self, and no need to pay for a creative effort that i can do my self. some may need this leg up which is fine then this is for those who need it, not me. peace out

Also of note, if this is done too much the players will grow tired of the DM always coming up with something that breaks the basic rules and structures of the game. When this happens they can lose interest as no matter what they do there is a chance that it is of no use. Not targeting this specific article just saying things like this will lead to other more abusive issues of the rule systems. We have seen this even in the past and current game designers who for some reason want to make a specific thing or ability that is counter to the fundamentals of the balance of the system, why have the rules when you constantly break them, anyway i am moving on good luck.

Homebrew and unique stuff like this is cool and radical actually, and more DMs should probably try it out instead of hewing themselves to a strict standard of 'default.'

What if you've got a cockatrice that rubs its beak on a person its petrified to the point an ear breaks off. Does the person un-petrify and bleed to death, or do they just have a deformity and are down an ear?

Mind you all: the same mechanism that caused the petrification in this example (cockatrice beak) is the same mechanism causing the disfiguring of the petrified victim.

Yeah, I'm going to need some support for the statement that players don't like homebrew creations. That really doesn't sound like any group of players I know.

Also, claiming this "breaks the basic rules and structures of the game" and is a "thing or ability that is counter to the fundamentals of the balance of the system" is also unsupported hyperbole. Please show how one magic affect not being the exact same as another magic affect breaks the fundamentals of the system.

We can all spout rhetoric, but a good debate comes when we all make reasoned and supported points.

I came up with this concept for a campaign in another game system almost 20 years ago. Have been pleased with it ever since. It's nice to see I wasn't the only one that could think it up or thought it was a cool idea.
