WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Monster_Manual_Traditional_Cover_Art_copy.webp

In Mike Mearls' recent interview with Ben Riggs, he talks about how he feels that Dungeons & Dragons has had its moment, and is now uncool again. Mearls was one of the lead designers of D&D 5E and became the franchise's Creative Director in 2018. He worked at WotC until he was laid off in 2023. He is now EP of roleplaying games at Chaosium, the publisher of Call of Chulhu.

My theory is that when you look back at the OGL, the real impact of it is that it made D&D uncool again. D&D was cool, right? You had Joe Manganiello and people like that openly talking about playing D&D. D&D was something that was interesting, creative, fun, and different. And I think what the OGL did was take that concept—that Wizards and this idea of creativity that is inherent in the D&D brand because it's a roleplaying game, and I think those two things were sundered. And I don’t know if you can ever put them back together.

I think, essentially, it’s like that phrase: The Mandate of Heaven. I think fundamentally what happened was that Wizards has lost the Mandate of Heaven—and I don’t see them even trying to get it back.

What I find fascinating is that it was Charlie Hall who wrote that article. This is the same Charlie Hall who wrote glowing reviews of the 5.5 rulebooks. And then, at the same time, he’s now writing, "This is your chance because D&D seems to be stumbling." How do you square that? How do I go out and say, "Here are the two new Star Wars movies. They’re the best, the most amazing, the greatest Star Wars movies ever made. By the way, Star Wars has never been weaker. Now is the time for other sci-fi properties", like, to me that doesn’t make any sense! To me, it’s a context thing again.

Maybe this is the best Player’s Handbook ever written—but the vibes, the audience, the people playing these games—they don’t seem excited about it. We’re not seeing a groundswell of support and excitement. Where are the third-party products? That’s what I'd ask. Because that's what you’d think, "oh, there’s a gap", I mean remember before the OGL even came up, back when 3.0 launched, White Wolf had a monster book. There were multiple adventures at Gen Con. The license wasn’t even official yet, and there were already adventures showing up in stores. We're not seeing that, what’s ostensibly the new standard going forward? If anything, we’re seeing the opposite—creators are running in the opposite direction. I mean, that’s where I’m going.

And hey—to plug my Patreon—patreon.com/mikemearls (one word). This time last year, when I was looking at my post-Wizards options, I thought, "Well, maybe I could start doing 5E-compatible stuff." And now what I’m finding is…I just don’t want to. Like—it just seems boring. It’s like trying to start a hair metal band in 1992. Like—No, no, no. Everyone’s mopey and we're wearing flannel. It's Seattle and rain. It’s Nirvana now, man. It’s not like Poison. And that’s the vibe I get right now, yeah, Poison was still releasing albums in the ’90s. They were still selling hundreds of thousands or a million copies. But they didn’t have any of the energy. It's moved on. But what’s interesting to me is that roleplaying game culture is still there. And that’s what I find fascinating about gaming in general—especially TTRPGs. I don’t think we’ve ever had a period where TTRPGs were flourishing, and had a lot of energy and excitement around them, and D&D wasn’t on the upswing. Because I do think that’s what’s happening now. We’re in very strange waters where I think D&D is now uncool.

Based on what, WotC demonstrated tremendous marketing savvy...?
based on how press releases are generally handled

Tasha's did sell faster than the 2014 PHB, yes: that's the point.
that is not what I wrote. I said that even the 2014 PHB at the time the 2024 one was out and during the timespan covered by the Q4 announcement would have outsold Tasha’s initial however many months, it would not have taken the 2024 PHB for that. So if the 2024 PHB had not managed that, it would be a major flop

Pretty sure we are all reading tea leaves here. Aka: We are all taking a, fairly tame and innocent, couple of tweets, and reading I to it what we will.

We don't have all the details. We cannot read his mind. We were not at the table, or witness to the events.

We are, all of us, reading tea leaves.

I'm not questioning your opinion, I simply have my own.

Fair?
I wasn't looking at his tweets, since I don't have twitter (or bluesky or any other sort of social media beyond forums like this one, since I am generally incapable of communicating in the character limits that they have). I was referring solely to the post he made here, #993. I don't need to "read tea leaves" or his mind to know exactly what he said in that post.

I didn't respond directly to his post. Instead, I had initially responded to a post made by AlViking, which wasn't even in response to anything they said--I was just mentioning that I feel freer to take crazy risks in the 5e game I'm in where there's next to no chance of me dying (due to having a grave cleric in the party). This led to Mamba asking me something, and in that response (#999) I also quoted Mearls' post from here, and this time I discussed the probable differences between a character that one has played with for potentially years and a possibly throwaway character for a one-shot con game. A death of the former will have a much different effect on many people than a death of the latter.

That led to other people talking about death vs. failure and The Walking Dead. And then you, who seems to have not realized I was talking about his post and not his tweet.

In rereading Mearls' post here, he talked about tweaks he made to "design drafting," which could mean he's actually referring to the game he's been working on on his patreon that I've been sort-of following and not either 1e or Shadowdark. I actually made a comment or two on there that he liked, in response to his designs. I'm a few posts behind on that project, though.

I also said general creep as an option. Thought you weren’t engaging a side?
Let's be clear. Whatever the situation, namecalling fellow forum members is very, very specifically against the rules. Please dial it down. You can critically and factually address behaviour without turning this place into the YouTube comments section.

Getting stuck in Monkey Island because I no longer have access to an item that turns out to be vital to finish the game (a situation I have experienced personally) tells me there's at least one fail state. As far as video games go, any game where you go back to an earlier save or start over counts as a fail state IMO.
It's been a while since I played it, but I don't believe there were any such "soft locks" in the game. It was roughly divided in three parts where you could pretty much move around within each of them to your heart's content, and where your inventory mostly reset in between the parts.

Why do you assume that is the case, though...? Our partial info from BookScan suggests Tasha's was a gargantuan seller.

Yes, exactly this. I have not wanted to link any of that crap here but what he said has ramifications. I’ve seen some of the articles and videos since his post. He can’t just pretend that his words don’t have impact.
He cannot control if other people use his words for negative content or control what people think.

The people who use his words for their own ends are already spewing that content.

If you are reacting to the mob and deciding that their take on his words are his intent, then you’re giving them a lot of power over you.

People say things all the time that can be viewed by any lens you use to interpret the comments.

No one can live their life in fear by parsing everything they think and say through a filter because they are worried that someone will use them for negative reasons.

If you let the negative crowd drive your perceptions, then they get to ride around in your head.

I have interacted with mearls for a long time through these boards so I am not going to make assumptions about his intent because a bunch of negativity shock jocks use it to gain views.
