WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

Over on Twitter and Bluesky, Chris Perkins has announced his retirement from Dungeons and Dragons.

Chris Perkins started officially working for Wizards of the Coast in 1997 as an Editor for Dungeon Magazine. Since then, he has functioned as the Editor in Chief of D&D Periodicals, A Senior Producer, and eventually landing as the Senior Story Editor over D&D 5e and Game Architect on D&D 5e 2024.

He also is known for acting as one of the Dungeons Masters for Acquisitions, Incorporated.

Personally, I'll miss the guy's work.

How about the top D&D talent creating their own RPG?

Because that's already happened. Before 5e ever came out.

13th Age was created by Rob Heinsoo (lead designer for D&D 4e) and Jonathan Tweet (a lead designer for D&D 3ed). A 2nd edition was successfully kickstarted last summer.

Give it a try.
iirc rob schwalb also worked at wotc before making shadow of the demon lord.

even things done outside of work hours? If I build a wood shed in my spare time, my employer owns it? I don’t think so…
Yes, that's how it works . . . depending on the work contract you sign. It's not uncommon in creative industries, and even other industries as well.

I'm a school teacher, and technically, any curriculum I develop belongs to my school district, due to the employment contract I signed.

The idea is, if you are using company time and resources, then it belongs to the company. Some contract clauses go beyond that, as they don't want you competing with the company that employs you.

Some of these contract clauses are reasonably written . . . but they can definitely go overboard and be unethical, especially if they demand that ANYTHING you create while employed there belongs to the company, even if you didn't use company time and resources.

13th Age is kickass. It's heroic fantasy on its face, very much like but moreso than 4e. I ran it for years. I'll be interested to see the 2nd edition. One of the few pain points of 13A 1e was dealing with the Icon dice RAW.

He was promoted to Creative Director five months ago.

I still don't really know what a creative director does or even a game Arctect does.
