I don't think the idea they were poking some fun at grognards is dumb. Rather, considering how often humor and blatantly making fun of critics came up back in the TSR days, particularly in publications like Dragon Magazine or in other parts of the industry like the Gigi D'Arn column in Different Worlds, the offended reaction is a little over the top.Especially considering that the lead D&D team is composed of those that played D&D in the TSR years. The idea that they were making fun of grognards is dumb.
Nobody's saying older fans should be made to feel unwelcome. All huskies are dogs, but most dogs aren't huskies.Well, ok. You see how easily we shift between "Please show me evidence of WotC mocking or disparaging older fans" and "those people SHOULD be unwelcomed"?
Genociding a species in a setting and making fun of those who like them are, in fact, different things.Seriously dude, do you get angry every time someone makes fun of gnomes on this board? The sheer amount of classic settings that genocided them? Your finding things to get mad at for the sake of being mad.
Which is why I explained my feelings. And it is fine if you are complicated.
But, if the complication is on your side of things, holding other people responsible for not threading the needle isn't particularly fair.
I don't understand this response. You've answered your own question.
If we're serious about that then we should do our best to make sure our statements condemning the huskies are clearly differentiated from our statements about dogs.Nobody's saying older fans should be made to feel unwelcome. All huskies are dogs, but most dogs aren't huskies.
I’m okay with that.I don't understand this response.
Again, if you watched the Tiefling and the Gnome video and felt insulted and mocked, that says more about you than it.Genociding a species in a setting and making fun of those who like them are, in fact, different things.
