Jeremy Crawford Also Leaving D&D Team Later This Month

Jeremy Crawford is leaving Wizards of the Coast later this month. Screen Rant (via me!) had the exclusive announcement. Crawford was the Game Director for Dungeons & Dragons and was one of the guiding forces for D&D over the past decade. In the past year, Crawford has focused on the core rulebooks and leading the team of rules designers. He has also been a face of Dungeons & Dragons for much of 5th Edition, appearing in many promotional videos and DMing Acquisitions Incorporated Actual Play series.

He joins Chris Perkins in leaving the D&D team in recent weeks. Perkins, who was the Creative Director for D&D, announced his retirement last week. Both Perkins and Crawford appear to have left Wizards on their terms, with Lanzillo very effusive with her praise of both men and their contribution in our interview.

On a personal note, I've enjoyed interviewing Jeremy over the years. He was always gracious with his time and answers and is one of the most eloquent people I've ever heard talk about D&D. I'll miss both him and Chris Perkins and look forward to their next steps, wherever that might be.

Huh? Um, do I even want to know?
Yes. 😂
But seriously others have explained so I won’t get into and cover the same ground. It’s a thing I saw complaints about though when Tasha’s was coming out.
It turns out that evergreen editions don't need evergreen designers. 🤷‍♂️
That seems fairly axiomatic. If it’s evergreen…by definition it doesn’t need the same guys sticking around forever and will carry on just fine decades after they’re gone. That’s…the point.
I am still in a camp that believes that Perkins and Crawford wanted to leave years ago but was convinced to stay by giving them the lead on the 50th year anniversary of D&D.

They didn't want to lose that chance and they stayed until the last core book was published and out the door

Then they bounced.

The simplest situation is often the correct one.
Legitimately a great capstone note to leave on.

no idea, will be a while before we have anything definitive, if ever. I assume it is the big project being complete now with only smaller stuff going on that is the reason for them leaving. That, or it is WotC trying to save money.

While we are speculating, any idea what either of them will do next?
Rumor has it that Hasbro &as been offering early retirement packages: maybe they got promoted, abd doubt after 6 months that they qualified for early retirement in their new pay grade after 6 months. That would be tempting, and more plausible than most Doomer scenarios.

Exactly this. Is this attitude more common with niche hobbies or just a natural reaction to getting older. I'm trying to be self-aware, but I don't recognize this attitude in myself. I enjoy a lot of the new stuff and still have access to and enjoy playing the old stuff that made me fall in love with the hobby. There is so much available content for all tastes, world views, and pocket books in the TTRPG hobby these days, it seems like a waste of mental energy to get worked up about changes in audience tastes in one segment of it.

As long as Wyatt is there I’m good.
I am glad you are. I was actually glad when he moved to the Magic:TG side of things as he was away from the D&D side, but still had a job. There are only two D&D products that I like with his name on it- Oriental Adventures 3e and Heroes of Horror. And, if I am being honest, I think the latter is due to the involvement Ari Marmell and, possibly, C.A. Sulemain.

*edit: Three if we include the Mahasarpa OA web enhancement (and it may be memories of both the OA Shaman class and the Mahasarpa web enhancement coloring my judgement about OA)
