What Are Your Non-Gaming Hobbies/Interests?

NIce. What kind of guitars do you have?

I wish I still had all my old guitars. Right now I just have an Ibanez. I want to get another classical (sold mine to get the Ibanez) and need to pick up a Mandolin too (I used to play when I was younger)
Alot, I lost count. I've been playing on and off since I was 12 so 38 years. I collect and play them as a hobby and look at them as investments too. I have mostly Telecasters and Epiphones, a few Strats. Besides those I have a few ESP LTDs, a Charvel, a Sterling Music Man, 2 Ibanezes, 2 Breedlove acoustics and a classical. I'm sure I'm missing a few. Honestly, I'm running out of room and my playing space is increasingly shrinking.

A friend of mine just had bypass surgery and I went to a benefit for him week before last and gave him an Epiphone SG to raffle off. I talked to him a few days after, and he said his GF "won" it. I laughed called B.S., but honestly, I was hoping he'd end up with it. So, we're gonna get together, hang out and jam soon. It was just one that I never really played much, theres just some guitars you favor more than others. Thats one empty space on my wall to fill, because you know, you always need just one more guitar. But I feel your pain, there are more than a few guitars I sold over the years that I wish I had kept

That Charvel I got about 2 months ago, great neck but the fret ends need to be filed down because they are sharp from fret sprout. I actually cut my hand on them. I sent it back once, and the second one I got was even worse.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of various forms of gaming? When and how did you find yourself interested in that? If you can, describe the joy it brings you.
I contribute to nixpkgs, which forms the basis of NixOS, but it supports other platforms too. I primarily focus on improving the support for Darwin. I first learned about Nix about six or so years ago. It took a few attempts for me to finally get it, but I did, and I use it to manage my computer and servers. Hopefully this does not violate the rules of the thread, but I started working on Darwin support because I use Wine from nixpkgs to play FFXIV, and I wanted to make sure that worked as well as it does. After rewriting the Darwin SDK support last fall, I’m currently working on improving the Swift support (because I started using mpv, which needs Swift to build). The oldest bug I’ve fixed so far was a twenty year old bug in Glib.

I spoke about Darwin, Darwin support in nixpkgs, and my work a few months ago on the Full Time Nix podcast.

Nice. I used to be into fast cars, even raced them, though as I said looking at a friend's new corvette recently, I think that would just get me a fat speeding ticket. The other day he told me he was ticketed for exceeding the speed limit by quite a bit. I was scanning the marketplace for fun, and saw a car I have wanted for a long time: a '55 desoto firedome, its got a 276 Hemi, just a cruiser though, not that much either, runs and drives:

I don’t drive very fast these days. If you think US laws on speed are harsh, UK laws are much, much more punishing. Which is a good thing in aggregate but means you always need to think before have some fun at speed. I find the enjoyment is pinning together a set of curves in a road, which can be enjoyed within the speed limits but probably wouldn’t be achievable in a ‘regular car’ at that speed.

I appreciate classic cars (been to Goodwood and other car festivals in the UK) but never been in a position to own one.

I love a good road. Classic cars are a real beauty like that Desoto, though the idea of having to get them repaired scares me off, fun to dream about though.

Got back into reading last summer, really enjoying that. Also really want to go back to theatre - I was in a teenager acting school and did a lot of amateur theatre productions. But its really hard to find a group in the city I moved into a few years ago. There are no groups in my age group (I'm 33), seemingly everyone is to busy in my age with career and family planning.

I also am currently savign money for a good epiano. Played a lot of piano and want to get back into it - but I don't have the room for an analogue piano and creative energy hits me in the dark hours - too late to play piano without headphones, the neighbors would kill me. Thus an epiano.

Besides that I enjoy running and driving my bike, going into (movie) theatres, going out with friends. Right now because finally all the trees are green and the air is fresh I just go exploring the city.

Family genealogy work - always had a bit of an interest, really went into it hard a bit over five years ago when I opened an account that let me easily put everything on line.

Scout things with the offspring - was involved myself until I was finishing undergrad, started again when the little one was in first grade.

Our ~1/2 acre of woods and the animals in it to appreciate and the invasive plants to battle - year 17 in the current house.

Mysteries (books and TV), mostly British ones at the moment - started reading Nero Wolfe around 2018 - led there by Old Time Radio and Glen Cook's Garrett Files. (Had liked random mysteries since Encyclopedia Brown when little, but not really as a genre).

Old Time Radio - liked it when I was a kid when it would come on once in a while, usually late night trips in the car from my grandparents when one station played it for much of the hour trip. Got a Sirius for the first time about 20 years ago and they have a dedicated station.

(Noticing that super hero comics don't really make the list lately - Avengers fan since 1981 and comics fan in general since way young... faded almost away the last several years.)
