[Help} 1st ed. 19 dexterity modifiers

Ulrick

First Post
I've created an elven fighter/mage/thief for a game in 1st edition D&D.

He has a 19 dexterity. I've searched through the 1e corebooks and the Dragon Magazine Archive, and I have yet to find the bonuses for having a 19 dex.
I know that the 2e books have accounted for a 19 dex, but I don't have those on hand.

Could somebody please post the bonuses(def adj, rctn adj, etc)--including bonuses to thieving abilities?

Thanks.

Those bonuses, as far as I knew could only be found in the Deities & Demi-Gods.

Unfortunately my books are packed up for a move Tuesday :(

Sorry.

In 1st Ed., it is possible to create characters with either a Dex or Con of 19, so I'll give them both to you. You may want to write them into your PH for routine reference. They can be found both in Deities & Demigods and the Monster Manual II (p. 7 of each book).

Con19: hp +5 (no 1's rolled) -- fighter classes only; poison save +1.

Dex19: Reaction/Attacking +3; Defensive -4.
Thief Abilities: Pick Pockets +15%; Open Locks +20%; Locate/Remove Traps +10%; Move Silently +12%; Hiding in Shadows +12%.

Ayup. I checked Unearthed Arcana, thinking it was in there, but my search was in vain. Odd, since the level maximum charts for demi-humans in that book go up to ability scores of 20 in some cases ... I know it was in Deities and Demigods, but my copy has mysteriously vanished.

IIRC, it was +4 to both reaction/attacking adjustment and AC. I'm almost positive it was, actually-I also had an elf with 19 dex once upon a time, and I recall being annoyed that it didn't improve his AC.

And dcollins beats me to the finish line, with correct info no less. I'd forgotten the one place I'd be sure to find it-on the character sheet for the character I mentioned (Delleroth, the elven magic-user/thief), which (naturally) I still have filed away nearly twenty years later.

Wow.
That's what I call quick service.

While do have the MMII and Deities and Demigods, I don't have them on hand. And I swore they'd be in Unearthed Arcana too. But they're not there.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate this.

Ulrick,
You can the Dexterity and all the other stats above 18 from the Deities and Demigods, or the Legends and Lore Books from 1st and 2nd ed.

You can find the stats above 19 in the following 1st and 2nd edition books: Monster Manual 2 (MM2), Deities and Demigods (DD)1st ed, and the Legends and Lore (LL) 1st and 2nd ed.
Additionally, there is a great explanation in the DD and LL books (p8, 2nd column, 2nd paragraph) about the extraordinary abilities that go along with having higher stats that Gary Gygax wrote saying that those special abilities are only given to the higher beings above mortal men, which I agree with. I.E., I do not allow my 20th-level Magic Users (Wizards) with 19 Int to have 1st Level Illusion Spell Immunities as they have not risen to Divine power. I do not agree with anyone who states that those supernatural abilities go to the mortal-born.
