"Man the disconnect between Casters and Melee is so annoying" - D&D players.
"Heres a solution." - SD.

I prefer roll to cast as well.

How does "roll to cast"/SD offer a solution to the "caster - melee disconnect" ?

From what I recall reading in SD(24' maybe), a caster gets unlimited spells until you roll a bad number, then you need to rest.. so in theory you could never run out, or cast once and run out? Don't care enough to crunch numbers etc., sure someone has though =P - in my DCC games(2024) (I played maybe 4-5 sessions), don't think I ever ran out, but seemed getting a beneficial result was the harder goal. /?

Also, unfamiliar with that gripe in general.. [i get it, but maybe been ignoring reddit/EnW chatter for awhile] but 4e balanced the game.. some say too much, ripped out the flavor the other D&D editions had and made a lot of people unhappy lol

I like OSE/A aka B/X retroclone, got an Illusionist to 5th before we jumped to Mothership. That was 1d4 HP a level, 8 int, no con and uh idk a total of around five [guartoneed] spells.. no access to fireball!

Roll to Cast, puts more risk of failure, on the Caster. The check in most cases is gone, so pass the check and you get the desired impact.

A common complaint in D&D discussion, is that a Wizard can replace, with more consistency, the Rogue or whatever, because spells are both more reliable, and safe.

Shadowdark addresses both the reliability, and safety.

Some people don't like it. Others do.
