I thought it was supposed to be more of a post-WWI, 1930s style vibe to accommodate pulp and noir style adventures?
The war setting has a bit of a pist-WWI interwar vibe, but the war itself was not exactly WWI, it lasted over a hundred years, more like the Thirty Years War on steroids. And the genre of fiction being emulated is like 1870s-1920s. Westerns lr King Solomons Mine stuff.

Yeah, i'm just saying - if you watch any adventure movies set around that time, the speed is part of the sense of action. I'd want to try to give players the idea that a fight on top of a moving train or jumping onto a moving train is a thrilling thing.

I was just surprised is all.

On the other hand, the train being watchable sets up pulp scenarios like a raptor Halfling raid.
You don’t need to be so slow for that. Raiding a train on horses is a Western trope. Over a short distance a horse can do up to 40 mph, which is about the top speed of an Old West train.

Thing is, slow moving trains are very vulnerable, especially over wide open spaces.

I think that realistically, lightning rail needs to be at least 30 mph to be practical over the long distances shown. And open-deck airships should be reduced to 10 mph.

Jumping off something going 10 MPH is not terribly smart.

Lookong into it, however, seems the consistent speed in Eberron products is 30 MPH.

Yeah, from a quick search 30 MPH for the lightning rail is the usual quoted speed , apparently, not 10.
