Kickstarter Traveller 5e powered by the DnD SRD in 2026 crowdfunding

My question is simply: who is this for? I can't imagine too many Traveller fans want it in a completely different, class and level based system. And 5E already has a metric ton of sci-fi adaptations out there. Why does this exist?

Oh good lord. Who is this for?

Me. It's for me. And gamers like me.

I've been curious about Traveller for years, never played it. It's unlikely I could get my play group to give it a try.

But a 5E version? I don't have to invest a lot of time or brain power to learn the rules. My group just might go for it. Also, it might make for good inspiration for my own sci-fantasy hack that's been rolling around in my head.

Who is this for? The same audience all of the other 5E ports that came before were for. And the many, many 3E ports from the 2000's.

I love them both, but they juat don't fit. 5E sci-fi is totally doable, but it would necessarily be kind of a high-powered gonzo Sci-Fi...which is not Traveller. It is not a heroic story milieu, not in the same high octane action that 5E provides at least.

You know what will be a good fit for Traveller however, is the generic Sci-Fi Plotweaver...becaue there are 6 basic careers that are not about superpowers.
Why not?

This new version likely won't appeal to Traveller purists . . . so?

It will likely appeal to folks who are Traveller curious, and don't often play games that aren't 5E adjacent.

Not every game is for everyone.
I'm a big fan of the heroic dungeoneering action of 5E, and I am not necessarily a purist about Traveller. I just fail to see what a high-octane action engine has to offer for a low-key, non-actuon oriented setting like the Third Imperium.

It is weird enough that I will take a leak as they fold it out, but it strokes me that wither the 5E rules or the Setting would have to change to the extent that it will be off-kilter.

I thought so too but Carbon 2185 has shown me that the power level can be curbed and adapted. So, it’s not as far apart as it might seem. I’m guessing if this thing bombs hugely it will be because it misses both 5E and Traveller feel.

That's a fair point, I think of 5e as high-powered because of the player characters' ability to punch well above their weight class... but while this uses 5e's engine, that doesn't mean it'll be "5e-compatible" where everything will be the same power level/backwards-compatible with 5e.

That's true. The 5e adaptation of Middle-Earth (both versions) are hardly at the same power level as WotC 5e.

What's confusing for me is that if you are talking about 5e on the Citizens of the Imperium forum, or with anyone else who already knows about Traveller, then they are likely to assume Traveller 5e means T5/Traveller5 -- the "5e version" that already exists.

On a D&D-centric forum, 5e may be taken to mean D&D 5e. On a Traveller forum, however, it typically means T5, just like on an Ars Magic discord server it would mean the fifth edition of Ars Magica and on a Call of Cthulhu subreddit you'd be safe to assume it's referring to CoC 5e.
I think you’re the only person confused about this. Everybody seems to understand that this is a (D&D)5E -powered version of Traveller.

Don’t worry about it. It’s fine. People aren’t confused.
