Tell your overdue Kickstarter story

Waiting on an overdue Kickstarter? Let us know in our survey!
FAILURE!.png

We're putting together a potential article on overdue (or failed!) crowdfunding projects.

So, tell us your story. Which crowdfunders are overdue, and by how much? What was the original estimated delivery date? We've set up a survey with which you can provide us information, and we'll be using that survey to put together an article in early 2026.

We have set a 1-year limit on this--to keep this down to a reasonable list, only crowdfunders which are a year or more overdue, please! That's a year or more past the estimated delivery date listed on the crowdfunding page.

Also, please note that this is for tabletop roleplaying game projects only.

Use the link below to fill out the short survey. It should only take a couple of minutes. Please note that if you include anything in the additional comments box, you may be quoted in the article.

Note--this thread was originally started in late 2024, but the survey has been created as of 20 December 2025 for an article due to be published in early 2026.

Masks of Nyarlathotep Prop Set for the Call of Cthulhu RPG

The props looked great but I think the creator got overwhelmed with the number of hackers and how much they needed to create. I got one part and then they disappeared.

Back in 2014, I went in big on this -- "A film-quality set of redesigned handouts and props for Masks of Nyarlathotep, a campaign for the Call of Cthulhu RPG." Masks of Nyarlathotep is an absoluteluy fantastic campaign, with a lot of globe-trotting and flexibility for the GM to insert his own scenarios. I'd been planning to run it, so I wrestled with my inner cheapskate, and pledged at the $325 level -- extraordinarily extravagant for me, but I was thinking that MoN can easily last a couple of years of consistent play, and having a fantastic prop set would definitely add a lot to the experience. And I had high confidence, since many of the props had been previously available as free downloads, so I'd had a chance to check them out!

The campaign was 1481% funded on December 15, 2014. All that was left was to do some of the big props (like the Mask of Hayama that came with my pledge) and to tweak the paper props and print them out on high-quality paper.

Then, came a string of minor progress updates, each coupled with an excuse. Fewer than 200 units (out of 507 backers) were eventually fulfilled -- all of them (as far as I can tell) people who had pledged for better-quality prints of the paper props that already existed. Within a year and a half, the creator declared the project mostly dead (the date on the update is January 26, 2016). Any remaining hope any of the other backers might have had evaporated when the Chaosium license expired that same year.

It's been almost exactly ten years since that update, and I'm still salty about this. I never ended up running the game for the people I wanted to run it for. Several are no longer in the state, so I'll never run it for them in a way I intended to. It's kind of put me off props in general. It took years before I was willing to take similar risks with high-cost levels in Kickstarters, and I don't think I'll ever back at that high a level again.

One of the things that really annoys me about it is that the free downloads that had been previously available were removed for the Kickstarter, and have never been made available again. I can't even get the downloads of what was previously there for everyone! I'm just SOL, I guess!

I wouldn't turn away from prop comedy DMing, myself. Etsy and similar sites will sell that kind of stuff direct to you, and you can see if people have already received the products and what the quality is.

(Honestly, Etsy is a huge resource for RPGs and should be more widely discussed as such.)

The psychological scars are still sore, man. I haven't run more than a one-shot of CoC since then, and it just brought back all of the ruined anticipation I'd felt.

The thing with KSs, is that when they pay off, they sometimes really pay off. It's really thrilling when a KS you are backing goes through the roof. I mostly back for miniatures, and I've gotten some incredible deals over the years - Reaper KSs and D&L KSs were incredible value.

So when the system works as it should - the creator gets the capital they need to make a success, and the consumer gets a great deal in exchange for money up front and a bit of patience, it's a win-win. And I love feeling like I contributed, in some little way, to a small business becoming successful. That's a warm glow. So I'll keep backing them.

One other thing: I really enjoy delayed gratification. If I have faith that the KS will deliver, I don't mind waiting at all. Sometimes I'll check in and re-experience the excitement of the cool stuff I will eventually get. Then when it does arrive, it's like Christmas.

Occasionally, things happen and you get a dud. Such is life.

It’s actually fun to me when I back a Kickstarter and forget what tier I backed it at, so it’s a surprise when I receive my pledge and get to figure out what gift past me bought for me. I recently received my Dolmenwood pledge and beyond knowing I was getting the 3 books, had no clue what else I was getting. Early Christmas gift!

The d20 Delving saga continues. In October WTG finally gave an update, saying the neighboring business had a fire and the they received water damage but insurance should cover everything. And of course that was followed by a promise to give us an update in 7-10 days. No update.

Hey folks! I'm collecting this information in a survey. If you have time, please head over and fill out the survey. It should only take a couple of minutes. That enables me to collate the info so I can write an article about it. Thanks!

I ened up skipping all my computer game KSes, since being overdue seems almost standard with them, and giving my worst-case late fulfillment in an RPG.
