If you make it to Skye, way on the north western edge there's Castle MacLeod. It has a very nice garden.

Probably not worth driving all the way there just for that. But we stayed with a very nice lady who lived at the Northwest point of Skye, and that was an attraction that was relatively close.
I think you mean Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod. I visited there in the Summer of 1987. At that season and latitude, the sun is up almost all day, just dipping below the horizon around midnight. Great for taking walks through the countryside, but watch out for the herds of sheep blocking the road!

ETA: On the same trip, I have fond memories of our stay at an inn in Inverarnan on the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. I'm not sure if it was The Drovers Inn, but it looked like the pictures and came complete with a kilted barman who made us breakfast in the morning.

Sorry, it’s been 25 years since I lived in Scotland, and I’m a chips-in-curry-gravy sort of person anyway.

The best smoked salmon I’ve ever had was at a restaurant somewhere in the maze of little lanes in Edinburgh Old Town. The eateries in Edinburgh tend to be quite international, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding something familiar, but finding something traditionally Scottish might be harder.

Haggis is horrible.

Any favorite pubs or bars or places to eat?
I was in a place called "The Newsroom" on Leith Street yesterday which was surprisingly pleasant - despite being the last weekend before Christmas it was surprisingly calm. The other place we usually end up is the Guildford Arms.

(Sorry - I don't have much experience with pubs or restaurants in Edinburgh. The annual Christmas night out tends to be my only visit in the year.)

Any city in the country. We'll be in Edinburgh, Skye, Inverness, Machirinish, st. Andrews, and somewhere north of Aberdeen.
