Tell your overdue Kickstarter story

Waiting on an overdue Kickstarter? Let us know in our survey!
FAILURE!.png

We're putting together a potential article on overdue (or failed!) crowdfunding projects.

So, tell us your story. Which crowdfunders are overdue, and by how much? What was the original estimated delivery date? We've set up a survey with which you can provide us information, and we'll be using that survey to put together an article in early 2026.

We have set a 1-year limit on this--to keep this down to a reasonable list, only crowdfunders which are a year or more overdue, please! That's a year or more past the estimated delivery date listed on the crowdfunding page.

Also, please note that this is for tabletop roleplaying game projects only.

Use the link below to fill out the short survey. It should only take a couple of minutes. Please note that if you include anything in the additional comments box, you may be quoted in the article.

Note--this thread was originally started in late 2024, but the survey has been created as of 20 December 2025 for an article due to be published in early 2026.

The problem is that even if you do that, there's no assurance that the pricing and practicality at the point you put them up as a stretch goal and at time of intended delivery will be the same.

Well that’s not an issue with stretch goals specifically. It applies to your core Kickstarter too.

I'm evildmguy, and I'm a recovering KS TTRPG backer. Well, no, I have backed recently, so I guess I'm off the wagon.

Of 132 backings, most gaming adjacent if not direct TTRPGs, 17 haven't delivered. That number is partially deceitful as seven are not late yet. That gives me a 7.6% failure rate on KS however I do expect one, Mycologist's Primer, to arrive. Of the remaining, two are my fault for not tracking this better until now, so my actual rate is 5.3%, which I find acceptable.

Realm Works is my biggest disappointment. Funded in 2013 but officially declared vaporware in 2019. No more updates but it was in an unusable state for me.

Never Ending Dungeon is my weirdest. Funded in August of 2021, we got monthly updates through August of 2024, when it was declared dead. It's a complex story. They changed focus at least once, if not twice, which caused delays. They ran out of money but were able to get a government grant, which turned out to be a "farce." They were backed by Spellarena, which also had issues. Out of the blue, two weeks ago, they said they were back. They had to go dark due to legal reasons about the grant and Spellarena but somehow came back and want to finish it. They went back to the original idea and released a beta. It needs a lot of work so I will see if it finishes.

I backed a creator for three projects of maps to use for my remote covid games. None of them every arrived. No idea what happened or why I was stoopid enough to keep backing them. That is my biggest mea culpa on KS.

At the moment, I have eight projects that aren't at deadline yet, although a few are this month. If all of them died, I would be at a 12.8% failure rate which would make me try to give up KS as best as I could. That won't happen, though, because one is ENWorld, which has never failed.

I'm spoiled by ENWorld/ENPublishing in how the do a KS. The PDF is ready to go and ships at the end of the KS, with physical coming along later, if they have a physical with it. The only one from them I had trouble with wasn't due to them. It was the Voidrunners boxed set but that was all shipping issues not from them and I have since received the replacement copy.

I really like a lot of ideas that creators have and got pulled into backing when I wanted that topic at that moment, or within a few weeks. This is why I was behind on checking on them because I didn't need it anymore so forgot to check up on it. I am getting better about that and the long term ones I backed, up to a year out, I'm ready for it.

I have listened to several KS people talk about how funding changed and it sounds like a mess. Ten years ago, creators would ask for what they needed to create or finish the item. Now, a lot of big projects ask for $10k so they can say they made funding in less than an hour, which helps them get the funding they actually need to do the project. A lot of creators are constantly doing projects to keep paying for past projects. It sounds like a nasty loop to be in.

As someone said, when they payoff, though, it's great! I finally got my Dungeon Pop pop up maps and got to use them in an in person weekend game. The oohs and aahs were worth it! Lots of fun! Same for the joy of having rules in a game I'm running, that the players don't know about. It's more about behind the scenes things are going smooth.

Submitted one but it's "only" a year overdue.

Thanks for the discussion!

These are my actual quotes from the discussion thread on the Forged: A Massive Miniature Collection 2022 Kickstarter (now completely MIA), over on the Minisgallery forums:

That $100 was the last time I backed a KS from a company without much of a track record. So, lesson learned. I shoulda listened to that guy from the first few posts.

Latest news on that one is that there will be no miniatures but they are maybe sorta kinda offering some STLs to folks with 3d printers or something.
I was fortunate only to back this one for the STLs, so I eventually received what I pledged for.

Broken Anvil were seemingly a reputable company. I was a Patreon supporter for many months, but then they switched to physical minis and went right off the rails.

BLG delivered for Altar Quest and Fantasy 1 (which was delayed a bit). I never got Horror, Fantasy 2, or Lasting Tales. I'm not going to hold my breath that I get any of those other Kickstarters.
BLG didn't deliver for Fantasy 1, though-- at least not in the USA.

Their storage fees for Fantasy 1 went into arrears and they wound up abandoning their inventory to Quartermaster Logistics.

QML were sort of the heroes here, though, and instead of just auctioning off the unclaimed property they gave Fantasy 1 backers the option of paying their share of BLG's debt plus shipping.

I paid TWICE to get Fantasy 1. Backers who didn't pay the additional fees got nothing.

Lim is a fascinating case study in the dangers of serial crowdfunding to say the least.
You're more charitable in your description of the guy's modus operandi than I am, which is probably for the best.

Although I'd strongly warn potential backers to R-U-N from any campaigns that he's involved in. The problem is that he has a history of launching new campaigns under front companies which deny his involvement. And it's pretty sad when someone's reputation has sunk to such depths that others have to conceal their involvement, yet they keep launching new campaigns anyway.

I guess I was confused about the specifics. Thanks for the clarification.

I will say that I have been training myself to not pursue crowdfunding projects that have too many separately produced stretch goals. An extra side book? A screen? OK. Dice? A challenge Coin? Minis? Unless its more of what the project is already making, avoid it.
Yes! I am getting so tired of all the cards, dice, stickers, and other junk. It is the equivalent of bloatware.

You back a tier that has the content you want and are forced to take junk.

Instead, give me more content or expand the book.

I think it is just a way to charge prices out of line with actual value.
