Armoured MMA

The sword wasn't a primary weapon, for a fully plate armoured knight. It was generally a backup to a primary like a polearm. (A whack on the head from a poleaxe is still going to take someone out, if only from concussion.) It would work well on lesser armoured opponents and wasn't completely useless on a fully armoured opponent. By "half-swording" you could grab the blade halfway, making it possible to better control the tip to get into spaces in the armour. It also provided leverage for wrestling an armoured opponent to the ground, where a dagger or half-sworded sword could get at something vital.
I def want a pole arm in fights but that's for folks more capable than I am now. I'm training with our team now to be an anchor on the list with falchion and buckler. Though I may reject the buckler.

Yeah, your sword is definitely a very good and relatively light and portable backup weapon against pretty much everyone who isn’t wearing plate armour, which is going to be most other people. When you end up in armoured MMA against another guy with the same kit, the sword is still very versatile, good for pommel strikes to ring his bell or half-sword stabbing through gaps.

But since stabbing is not allowed here, you’re mostly just battering them hoping to cause bruises or concussion with a less than perfect weapon for doing so.

Is this on the Ocho, I have been seeing some strange contests on there lately. Would like to see this instead I have some sort of Quidditch called Quad Ball or such. I have the ax throwing which is cool for 5 minutes. I found myself watching the HVAC technician championship. It is exactly what it sounds like with techs repairing air conditioning. I found myself asking myself questions about life after 5 minutes.

Why wouldn't one just rugby tackle the other, and then immediately stab him with a dagger?
A good question, and I think we see the answer in one of the OP fights. The sword is kind of useless, and the winning combatant seems to get more use out of her buckler by stabbing with it.

Buckler: The brass knuckles or the Renaissance ;)
Interesting to me: while both fighters wear their shields in the stylish, Elden Ring latidudinal style, one of them still gets it wrong. One wears the thick part near her knuckles, while the other wears the thick part near her elbow.

Many moons ago I saw a Magic: The Gathering tournament on ESPN. It's crazy what they'll do for entertainment. There's professional face slapping. You just stand there and let another person slap you IN THE FACE! Then they wait for YOU to slap them in IN THE FACE! How messed up is this world? But that HVAC thing might take the 🎂.

But if you watch the fight, you'll see that "wrong" way provides some pretty good face protection. Those are small shields, though, not bucklers. They're strapped to the forearm. If you look at the fight posted by @darjr in the second post of the thread, those are bucklers. They have a centre mounted handle and aren't a whole lot bigger than the hand. Maybe a foot across at most, usually.
