WotC Shawn Merwin joins Wizards as contract game designer

Most US states have a time limit on contract v. full time work.
Plus, Shawn mentioned that because he's contract he can still create other works -- with care and concern for not crossing the streams

That's really great news, very happy for him. Shawn has been doing great work on 5e since its earliest days. Glad they made the smart move of working with him.

While purposefully a short-term contract, nothing will prevent WotC and Merwin from renewing that contract if they want/need to.

A lot of positions, or even entire professions, are on renewable one-year contracts. Doesn't mean Merwin will only work for WotC for one year.

A number of folks who had prominent roles in D&D were on contracts. Mainly it came down to two things:

• There's a specific project they are working on
• They don't want to relocate to Washington for a full-time job

On year is pretty standard and would make sense for working on a specific project.
