D&D General Tools for PCs?

Looks like I'm canceling my dndbeyond sub, given the relationships with Rowling....

Do you have tools you recommend for creating and managing characters? Legal ones only, pls. thanks,

I might just use foundry, and then print out sheets? Not sure. And no, I'm not going to keep my account at beyond either, so I won't be using the free parts either.

What is D&D Beyond doing with Rowling?

I support this decision, but I’m unaware of what relationship D&D Beyond has with her? I know Hazbro included Harry Potter in a list of upcoming partnerships, which I suppose might be reason enough not to want to support Wizards of the Coast. But is there any specific information connecting this to D&D or WotC yet?

A Harry Potter M:tG set is absolutely not happening in the foreseeable future, and I would put real money on that. First of all WotC tweeted shortly after this announcement that M:tG already has a magic school setting and they currently have no plans of releasing any sets tied to another. If that language is too weasely for your taste, trust in the fact that like a quarter of WotC’s magic design team is trans, not to mention a significant portion of their playerbase. I have met way more trans women playing Magic than I have playing D&D or any other roleplaying game, and we’re already a way over-represented demographic within the hobby.

I believe Fantasy Grounds is free to use now. One only needs to buy the plug-ins for whatever game you're playing. And, yes, it looks like they support both 5e (2014) and 5e (2024).

I'm not as confident about that as you are. Even through they made that announcement, Hasbro likes money ---> MtG is the cash cow ---> Harry Potter has lots and lot and lots of fans who would buy the cards.

Many corporations have gone back on announcements in the name of the buck.

Hasbro owns DNDBEYOND. That's all I need to know. I don't want to give Hasbro money.

Sure, and if it was just about potential sales, that would make a Harry Potter set seem pretty likely. But they would also have to rebuild the staff who make the cash cow. And, again, they said they wouldn’t in response to this announcement. Like, if you want to argue that a possible future Harry Potter crossover could still eventually happen, that’s not impossible. But the partnership Hazbro was talking about is not an M:tG set.

WotC included. But this wouldn’t be going back on an announcement. That would be the parent company announcing something and the subsidiary saying “they aren’t talking about us” when it is absolutely about them.
