DLSS 5 will be the worst thing to EVER happen to video games

Do I really need to say anything else?

I guess I'll say a little more. Nobody other than a few of the worst people on the planet, who are the reason you likely can't afford to build a new PC right now, asked for what amounts to a grotesque Instagram/Snapchat/etc. Yassification filter on your video games.

Oh that's nice! * goes off to buy a RTX 5090 and a small powerplant *
;)

Look, it's still a very nice development, I just wonder what the drawbacks are and if the pro/con weigh out. That buying computers is currently very expensive due to RAM and GPU prices going crazy * shrugs * , things will change again. We've had similar issues during two crypto booms with GPUs, the big difference now is that you have a lot of other options to play video games and what you already have will work fine as well.

I already stepped out of the computer hardware insane arms race (5+ years ago), with them turning into room heater units. I currently games on either my Mac Mini (M4 Pro), Steam Deck (LED), or on GeForce Now (GFN). I also have a couple of other options as well, but those I mentioned are very power efficient (very little power = very little heat).

Still, a 5090 is around here is only ~30% more expensive then at their lowest point, that's peanuts compared to the situation at the height of the crypto craze.

The image on the right is obviously superior, in terms of looking more "realistic", than the image on the left.

I don't play top-tier games anyway, so I imagine I won't see much of an impact on my personal gaming decisions until the 2030s.

But the fact that this seems to be a technological leap seems to me to be inarguable.

I think for the example above, it is clearly an upgrade on the image. That said, I’ve seen other articles and examples from games with before and after, and there are clearly cases where the improvement is negligible or neutral to my eye. I can see that the image is different in some cases but it’s like me playing with a pic in Photoshop - I can alter the shadows and contrast filters but am I really making it objectively better?

Obviously, until it's released into the wild we can never be sure; there will of course be situations where the technology isn't helpful or actively obscures the original artistic intent. How often it occurs, and how negative the impact is in those specific use cases, will be something to be argued over.

But in the few examples I've seen, it really does seem to sharpen and clarify the image in a pretty impressive manner.

My ultimate point is I think rather than being the worst development ever, it’ll make some things better, some things not, and it will be just be part of the greater landscape, so to speak.
