For those that don't understand what's going on:

DLSS stands for 'Deep Learning Super Sampling', it's an AI (deep learning) powered technology for image enhancement and upscaling in (mostly) video games. Made by Nvidia for use with their videocards, version 5 is the newest incarnation, which adds the OPTION to use an AI model for enhancing lighting and material surfaces using neural rendering.

The developer needs to integrate DLSS 5 themselves into each game, and you can turn it on or off, so first the developer retains control on using this technology or not, second the user of the game/hardware has the option to turn it on or off. People that don't want to use it, don't have too. Apparently this will only work with the RTX 50xx series of video cards from Nvidia, DLSS5 will be released this fall.

There has been a movement within the computer games communities where a certain subset doesn't want 'fake' frames or pixels in their computer games. Which is odd, because every frame/pixel is fake in the first place. But that doesn't matter to certain crowds with torches and pitchforks. Where they paint everyone that does want to use this technology as someone 'bad', etc.

The OP is obviously going on a rant that's not really structurally argued, as they seem to be really angry... For some reason...

The "reason" being, no matter how much you want to copy/paste from NVIDIA's website and pretend to be more knowledgeable on the subject than me, I don't want all video games looking like someone put an Instagram filter over it all.

No, that was written by me. Yes, it collects information from different sources, but it wasn't copy paste. I might not be more knowledgeable then you on the subject-matter, but I am more knowledgeable then the people that asked what this was about. You don't like this? This tech isn't aimed at you, the creator retains control, the user retains control, this is just an option. You don't like, you don't use. How difficult is that to understand? Other people have differing opinions from yours, you don't agree, fine.

If your belief is that the designers who worked on the left-hand image didn't wish they had the tools to create the right-side image with real-time rendering, my gut feeling is that you're mistaken.

I guess I'll say a little more. Nobody other than a few of the worst people on the planet, who are the reason you likely can't afford to build a new PC right now, asked for what amounts to a grotesque Instagram/Snapchat/etc. Yassification filter on your video games.

Haha, yeah, I don't know why anyone would thought this was needed in video games, turns the women into that generic AI girl, not something I'd really see myself using instead I'd just stick to the original graphics.

There's some things I like about genAI such as quickly running up an image for a dnd game or bouncing ideas of chatgpt, but things like dlss 5, browser and operating system bloat aren't really what I'm after and while I think these big companies will blunder on, they're definitely getting blowback from their communities.

yes i copied the response from google after coping in your question of what is a DLSS, it was either that or just linking you to NVidia's website from where it pulled the info. my own words would have been "makes the game look better or worse depending on your view and uses AI" seemed a bit insufficient of an explanation
