At least in my part of the world between 2000 and 2005 computer typing class was 2 spaces after a period to start a new sentence. That’s why I’m curious.

The annual World Happiness Report from the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford looked at how social media use might be affecting happiness on a population level, and found in some cases it was having an impact.

While this year's report focuses on social media's affect on happiness, it notes that Canada didn't collect data on internet activity and life satisfaction.

In other countries, the report says, "life satisfaction is highest at low rates of social media use and lower at higher rates of use."

I dont use snd never have Twitter, tik tok, Instagram etc.

Barely use Facebook mostly for messenger.

Youtubes mostly music and D&D stuff. I do use reddit but its mostly specific games or hobbies and recruiting fir D&D.

Basically wut me worry.

Well you absolutely should fear a post truth world. That’s how the oppressive regime gets to power in the first place and how they stay in power. What is the point of your dissent if nobody believes its real and nobody believes the suppression of your dissent is real?

That’s all a bit of a red herring though because the overwhelming majority of citizens are using their real names on social media… that includes the dissenters. There are people dissenting under their real names all the time in oppressive regimes.

The problem is the fakes and the pseudonyms. They’re the ones generating the AI images and sharing them. The disinformation. You’re talking as if these hidden actors are doing something worthy and useful. Even if they are they are being counterbalanced by the mountain of people using it for nefarious reasons.

A proper exposition of my side of things requires bringing examples that far exceed the constraints of these forums. Just notice that lack of annonimity hasn't stopped bad people from doing power grabs abd stuff happened before social media was a thing. And if all you can think is to fear the fake news and demand to erase annonimity on internet, then you truly live in an extremely safe and stable environment. Without you sharing that experiences I have and me being unnable to bring enough examples to even began to explaim my side, I think we just don't have a way to see eye to eye in this issue.
