Shadowdark Shadowdark Discussion Thread [+]

The two pillars of the game design I am working on now are non-binary roll results and a back and forth flow of GM and player metacurrency. The latter is something I add to nearly every game I run.

Fleeting Luck from the DCC Lankhmar set might be something to look at for inspiration.

You could also use the lightside/darkside tokens from Edge of the Empire (along with rolling the d12 at the beginning of every session).

Kelsey sent out an email update. Discussing how she would convert I6 to Shadowdark and then...tells us she won't provide said conversion document.

...

Anyway, work continues on Western Reaches lol

It would be pretty poor behavior for her to violate another company's copyright, especially as she has valuable IP of her own now.

I thought the doc was pretty useful. I'm probably going to combine it with the vampire listing in The Monster Overhaul and roll my own Ravenloft-like, though.

I mean yeah, she explained, but it felt a bit rough as I was waiting for some data to process. :D

If she already said how she'd do it what do you need a conversion document for?

So I don't have to repeat it! She said she took the day, a full day is a very valuable thing!

...every time I read Shadowdark's Quickstart again I'm struck by how good it is (especially the succinct & explicit GM guidance), but also I like the DH 2d12 and less-old-school-lethal play.

So I'm trying to build a mashup with 4 simplified core classes, lol.

Yes!

Shadowdark core, Daggerheart dice/resolution mechanics, sprinkle on some Borg for flavour, perhaps some B/X "ancestry-as-class" and blend it up.

Where I think I'm landing on XP, is Treasure, and then you have the whole back catalog of all those OSR or older adventures to leverage. I think the XP/Progression system may be what actually drives the whole thing as its what I've been waffling on for the last week.

At least thats where I would take it if I could get things finished.

Man, SD’s simplified XP as treasure is so good here too. As somebody with (0) nostalgia for old systems, I can’t get over how well Kelsey took the beating heart of “D&D” and did something that learns from decades of design without bloating.

(When I get some more design done in “Shadowheart” I’ll ping you in the DH thread)
