The Mad God's Key (Bront Judging)

"Given that the office we just left was in the Tower of Aureon, the fact that our employer wore a prominent holy symbol is more likely to mean that he's a priest than that he's a charlatan hoping to win our trust with the appearance of piety.

Still, maybe he's lying and maybe he isn't. It doesn't actually change our course of action for the present. We have evidence to collect, and when we've collected enough of it we can form our own judgment about the situation."

If the party passes any establishment where scroll materials can be purchased, and if the non-warforged members of the party are willing to split the costs, Sirrel will hop in quickly and buy six spells worth of the relevant inks. Hopefully she'll have time to use them before things turn too deadly. Other than that, on to the crime scene!

"Excellent work, Sirrel my good sidekick!" Alysina praises with a smile, "I thought our good Proctor was being aboveboard with us, at least as far as the religion."

"Now then, let's check out that body--forensics will help us determine a lot more about the thief, if not about the current holder of the book, since after all, it could have been a hired goon that stole it, or even a summoned creature!"

"Indeed, let's go."

Rio leads the others towards the scene, waiting for Sirrel when we pass the scroll materials shop.

Upper Menthis Ward, University District: Delannan Tower (University Library)

Within Delannan Tower lies the main library. It has dozens of satellite branches throughout the University District, but the most valuable tomes and collections are kept here, supposedly safe from danger.

The directions lead you to the depths of the library, into a large room easily twenty feet high. Massive wooden bookshelves rise up to the ceiling, and are crammed with hundreds of tomes. The room has a weight to it, a dusty scholarly feel that is almost oppressive.

After you wind your way through the stacks, the back wall is lined with a series of stone doors, each bearing complicated locks. One of them has two librarians before it, a dwarf and a half-elf. Upon being presented with the letter of marque, the dwarf pushes the door open.

Inside is a series of glass cases, each with three rows. On each row are books, but in far smaller amounts that the stacks outside. The books are carefully arranged, and they all look valuable. Lizard-scale covers, arcane symbols, one even looks to be composed of pages of flayed goblin skin...Although none of you are wizards, they each bear the hallmark of an arcanist's spellbook.

The body laying on the floor makes a mockery of the reverence in which the books are held. A young man in student's robes lays face-first on the stone floor just a few feet inside the room. Blood has pooled (and then dried) under him.

*Alysina searches the corpse and his surroundings for clues!*

[SBLOCK=OOC]Search = 23--Eureka!

EDIT: Then later, she takes 20, like a good girl, and gets 27[/SBLOCK]

"I'll check the area for auras. A murder scene is inherently suspicious, is it not? Someone should check the body for possible clues, as well as searching the room more generally."

Making sure not to touch anything, Rio will activate his detect evil ability and walk around the room, scanning in all directions including out through the walls. It's possible that some lingering aura remains, but unlikely... it's also possible that the murderer still hides nearby.

Sirrel pokes around a bit, but leaves most of the searching to the enthusiastic human.

"The thieves must have known exactly what they were looking for. Nothing here has been disturbed...except him."
She glances over at the corpse and shudders.

[sblock=OOC] Search 1d20+6=9.[/sblock]

[SBLOCK=OOC]If two people can successfully aid the Take 20, Alys would have 31, which might be a threshold if the Search DC is 30. Then again, that may be an unreasonable Search threshold.[/SBLOCK]

[sblock=OOC]I'm waiting for responses/actions from the other two PCs, although I imagine Weapon will stand in stony silence, as he was designed violence, not investigation. ;) :D

On a rules note, it may be more beneficial for everyone to aid the person with the highest Search check - each aid grants a +2 bonus, as Rystil mentioned. It's up to the five of you to determine if you want to go that route.[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]I wasn't sure if aiding on a Take 20 was allowed. If it is, Sirrel takes 20 for a 26, and aids with amazing success.[/sblock]
