The creature appears to be a pachyderm larger than a house, with four massive tusks, two upward-turning and two downward-turning. Its hide is decorated with elaborate warpaint, and it bears a large wooden howdah on its back.

Mûmakil, also known as oliphaunts, are gigantic elephantlike creatures. Humans and other creatures often breed them for war, and outfit them with a variety of equipment to increase their already formidable combat prowess (see Mûmakil Equipment, below). A typical mûmak crew consists of a driver who stands on an exotic saddle and a howdah carrying up to 4 passengers.

An oliphaunt's crew usually spends hours decorating their mûmak with elaborate warpaint prior to going to battle. Many decorate themselves as well, often with designs matching their warbeast.

A mûmak stands around 40 feet tall and 60 feet long from tusk to tail. It weighs about 25 tons.

Mûmakil cannot speak.

Combat

Mûmakil are straightforward in combat. They simply trample most adversaries, while flinging others aside with slams from their massive tusks.

Frightful Presence (Ex): A mûmak can unsettle foes with its mere presence. The ability takes effect automatically whenever the mûmak attacks or charges. Creatures within a radius of 60 feet are subject to the effect if they have fewer HD than the mûmak.

A potentially affected creature that succeeds at a Will save (DC 20) remins immune to that mûmak's frightful presence for one day. On a failure, creatures with 4 HD or fewer become panicked for 4d6 rounds, and those with 5 HD or more become shaken for 4d6 rounds. A mûmak ignores the frightful presence of others of its kind. This is a mind-affecting fear effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Trample (Ex): Reflex half DC 37. The save DC is Strength-based.

Training a Mûmak

A mûmak requires training before it can bear riders in combat. Training a mûmak requires six weeks of work and a DC 25 Handle Animal check. Riding an oliphaunt requires an exotic saddle. A mûmak can fight while carrying a rider, but the mûmak cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

Mûmak young are worth 24,000 gp each on the open market. Professional trainers charge 1,500 gp to rear or train a mûmak.

Carrying Capacity: A light load for a mûmak is up to 2,128 pounds; a medium load, 2,129–4,256 pounds; and a heavy load, 4,257–6,400 pounds.

Mûmakil Equipment

Barding: Since mûmakil are Gargantuan, barding for a mûmak costs sixteen times what a human's armor costs and weighs sixteen times as much. A mûmak in medium or heavy barding moves at a speed of 30 feet; in heavy barding it moves at only triple normal rate when running instead of quadruple.

Howdah: A mûmak howdah can hold 2 Large or 4 Medium or smaller creatures. Passengers must make a DC 5 Ride check to attack. It provides one-half cover to its occupants. Cost: 800 gp; Weight: 560 lb.

A howdah for a Colossal mûmak can hold 4 Large or 8 Medium or smaller creatures. Its weight and cost are double that of the standard mûmak howdah.

Tusk Chains: This massive spiked chain is connected to two of the mûmak's tusks. It can use it to mow down foes. When affixed with tusk chains and making a gore or trample attack, a mûmak can attempt to trip the opponent (+29 check modifier) as a free action without making a touch attack or provoking an attack of opportunity. If the attempt fails, the opponent cannot react to trip the oliphaunt. Victims of a trample attack who make successful Reflex saves are not subject to the trip attack. Cost: 90 gp; Weight: 100 lb.

Tusk Spikes: This ring of spikes can be affixed to a mûmak's tusks, causing its slam attacks to deal piercing damage and increasing the critical multiplier to x3. Cost: 50 gp; Weight: 30 lb.

Notes: Per Complete Warrior, the Epic Toughness feat now grants +30 hit points, which has been factored into the bonus hit points above.
