    I really like the covers!

D&D General What the Melf's Guide to Greyhawk cover might look like

I dislike the excuse of a different cultural time. It was the 70s and early 80s. I was there, growing up. The civil rights movement and women's liberation were not exactly quiet. The racism and sexism in movies, TV and yes, rpgs was really frustrating at the time. The preface in the history...

13th Age The virtues of 13th Age, and comparisons to other fantasy games

I love the background system in 13th Age. They not only inform the skills your character has, but also their personality with some details from their past. Royal Huntsman vs. Poacher, for example. They'd have overlapping but not identical skills.

13th Age The virtues of 13th Age, and comparisons to other fantasy games

Maybe like 4e's more "radical" cousin. Players can swap class features around, so you could give up a fighter ability for a ranger one, for example. It's generally more free wheeling. There's much less pulling and shoving talents because you are probably not using grids. Armour and weapons...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark Discussion Thread [+]

I'm playing in a very Swords and Sorcery SD game right now. I have a dwarf pitfighter named Naugrim, who started game with very little gold. He had an empty backpack, a shortsword and shield. Maybe a few rations? In typical S&S fashion, we aren't heroes, but yet always succumb to a sob story...

13th Age Everything you ever wanted to know about 13th Age and Shadow of the Demon Lord/Weird Wizard

I don't usually read monster books straight through, as I just flip through for what I might need. 13th Age was the exception. 😊 Monster Overhaul too.

13th Age Everything you ever wanted to know about 13th Age and Shadow of the Demon Lord/Weird Wizard

My favourite in 1st edition 13th Age were the Redcaps, that would reappear when players said "the word" chosen by GM during their first encounter.

D&D General Combat as War vs. Sport and a Missing Third Mode

Yes, I agree completely. Games like Daggerheart and a lot of superhero games embrace this style. I think this might also cause some of the tension between players in games like D&D, where some players make decisions based on their characters' personalities, and others on best tactical choices...

OSR Why does OSR Design Draw You In?

Nostalgia doesn't draw me to the OSR, because I didn't like D&D back in the day. What is drawing me in is the imaginative ideas and creativity flowing from the modern OSR. Hole in the Oak from Gavin Norman got me excited to run a dungeon crawl for the first time ever. Brad Kerr's Wyvern Song was...

OSR Why does OSR Design Draw You In?

I've never had trouble with this either. Same with 13th Age, where skills are encompassed in statements like"Ranger of the Far North." Absoluty my favourite way to handle skills.

    Does Anyone Care? (Cosmere RPG)

I agree with this. I don't read Sanderson but this game comes across to me as a labour of love. And maybe not a lot of reviews, but very positive ones, and not from gushy Sanderson fans. It was a huge KS. And even if it came mostly from Sanderson fans who've never played a RPG before, this...

    Dolmenwood general discussion thread [+]

Dolmenwood characters are designed for the setting. The spells are as well. I wouldn't sell your OSE books, unless you are going to run Dolmenwood or something similiar forever. I love Dolmenwood but use OSE for more traditional D&D style games.

RPG Evolution: Why Paper Beats Pixels

Not true. I teach adults. Many of my students who are fresh out of high school prefer to study from physical books as well. Text book companies are offering many titles as digital only, and there has been complaints from all age groups. There are, of course, students who prefer digital, and they...

RPG Evolution: Why Paper Beats Pixels

I use physical books, paper, pens and pencils as much as possible. I vehemently dislike using digital character sheets, preferring to write out the info myself. I know my character better both mechanics wise and role playing wise. I enjoy the process of levelling up and don't find it takes very...
