5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Works for me, although I'd lean towards going even lower to a Giant Wasp's STR 10, a Giant Wolf Spider's STR 12 or a Giant Crab's STR 13. I've updated the Male Dire Mosquito Working Draft with CR 1 (200 XP), STR 12, +4 to hit, 1d6 + 2 damage.

Quiet? I find their whining drone so annoying that if there's one in my bedroom I had to get up and dispose of the dang thing before I can get to sleep.

Oh damn it, the Male Giant Mosquitoes were size Medium not Large. Changed the Male Dire Mosquito Working Draft from. Large beast, unaligned Hit Points 52 (7d10 + 14) To: Medium beast, unaligned Hit Points 52 (8d8 + 16) That doesn't change anything else.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

According to the 2014 CR Calculator, if we give the Male a DPR of 15–32 he'll be Challenge 2, with DPR 6–14 he'll be Challenge 1 and with DPR 4–5 he'll be Challenge 1/2. The AD&D Male Giant Mosquito was worth 420 XP compared to 975 or 1,400 for the Females, so I think CR 1 is most appropriate...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

In Fifth Edition a creature with hovering flight is more resistant to falling: FLYING MOVEMENT Flying creatures enjoy many benefits of mobility, but they must also deal with the danger of falling. If a flying creature is knocked prone, has its speed reduced to 0, or is otherwise deprived of the...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Hold on, I just realized something. Shouldn't the Female Mosquito have (hover) on her fly speed? For that matter, shouldn't our Giant Horsefly have (hover) as well?

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Updating the Female Dire Mosquito Working Draft. So this one's done I think. Male next methinks.

    Converting True Dragons

The idea was "briefly paraphrase what was in the Master Rules, Rules Cyclopedia and Immortals Set" and tweak Pearl's basic tactics.

    Converting True Dragons

Updated the Opal the Sun Dragon Working Draft. We've had a few numbers to sort out. First, Armour Class. In the BECMI original, Pearl is one better than Opal: AC –9 vs. AC –8. So how about giving his 3.5 version two more points of natural armour for Armor Class 52 (–8 size, +40 natural, +10...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Updating the Female Dire Mosquito Working Draft. I toyed with the idea of adding an ability like that but decided against it. Fifth edition seems to avoid minor "flavour" traits like that, at least in the Monster Manual. That said, we could tweak the Description to mention that habit, like...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

How's this Description Dire mosquitoes are monstrous insects that can be as big as a horse, although their slender bodies and limbs make them far lighter. A female dire mosquito looks just like an ordinary blood-sucking mosquito apart from the size, with a body length from 9 to 12 feet. A male...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Updating the Female Dire Mosquito Working Draft. So it's just the Description to do and we can start on the males.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Oh, and the original monster was slower in the air than a Giant Horsefly so I'd make it Speed 15 ft., fly 50 ft. Putting that together and updating the Female Dire Mosquito Working Draft.

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

I'm also thinking of increasing the Hit Dice a tad since the original monster had 7 HD (Culex) or 8 HD (Anopheles, which is more than an AD&D Giant Scorpion. In 2E AD&D 8 Hit Dice averages 36 hit points while 5+5 HD averages 27.5 hp. A 5E Giant Scorpion has 52 (7d10 + 14) so if the mosquito has...

5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

I'm thinking about removing the "from the target" from "after it drains ## hit points of blood from the target" since the dire mosquito could drink her fill from multiple targets. Maybe make it:  The mosquito can end the grapple by spending 5 feet of its movement. It does so after the target...
