    Situations to keep combat interesting

The Contraption Players knew someone was digging around some ruins and expected a dungeon crawl. Instead they found a quasi magical contraption built to siphon energy from a sleeping demon for some purposes and some crazy men who were half human, half demon. So there is a room with a rotating...

    Situations to keep combat interesting

The Chase The point is to get to a foe. Obsticals in the way add to the excitement if they matter without just screwing the players. This is a scenario I had where the players were set to boring guard duty with the likelyhood of a boring combat, then the wagon with multiple carts they're...

    Situations to keep combat interesting

So, not just any way to keep combat interesting. Being a better GM would help. Enthralling the players would go really far and so would practicing your theatrical skills. But Situations. Everyone can come up with situations. Could be a complication or an event or some bizarre tactics. What...

    Using Powers Outside of Combat

Ahh, so with Otherworld Stride you could think of it less as an attack that allows you to teleport and more like a teleport that can potentially cause damage. I think I confused the "Effect" with the "Hit"/"Miss" rules. Thank you so much. That does make some of the powers a bit better :)

    Using Powers Outside of Combat

Technically true, but of no importance. Round by round or in story mode the point is that a player wanted to teleport, but technically had no foe to trigger the effect. I am interested in official rules, but I'm not going to be a pedant to the players over the cost of fun and swashbucking...

    Using Powers Outside of Combat

I had some players doing "Caravan Duty" and ended up in a wagon chase. Two players fighting from cart to cart to the front and two others trying to catch up on another wagon. The players on the carts working their way up were fine with combat as is. Just using Powers and a LOT of skill checks...

3 Strikers and a Controller - Tactical Advice?

Stuck late at work importing work from one system to another... at least I have 5-10 minutes during data transfers while I'm waiting and I have the PHB here :) The Warlock did take the multiclass cleric feat. She read the Healing Word power wrong. It's a minor action, not a standard... which...

    Crit Max Damage Question

Is all your damage except for extra crit damage maxed? Ex: Rogue backstabs for 1d8 (weapon) + 2d6 (sneak attack damage) = 20 damage? Ranger vs Quarry hits for 1d10 (longbow) + 1d6 (quary) = 16 damage?

3 Strikers and a Controller - Tactical Advice?

I admit, the rogue & ranger can assassinate very easily if they're set up properly. The Warlock lacks that oomph at 2nd level that a ranger has with twin strikes or a rogue has with sneak attack from what I'm seeing. I'll look over the class and see if the player is missing anything.

3 Strikers and a Controller - Tactical Advice?

The players are all fairly new and viewing things as what they want to do, not how they should suffer with something they don't want in the hopes that it will be more fun than playing something they do want to play. I wasn't the GM at the time, but I did bring it up before we chose classes. I...

3 Strikers and a Controller - Tactical Advice?

Oh, and I just wanted to point out that I *do* have experience GMing and *don't* rely on the system to provide balance for me. I try to run each system as is to the best of my skills (or it's capabilities) while I'm learning it and then adjust things for the game I end up running like for 3.x...

3 Strikers and a Controller - Tactical Advice?

Well, I don't trust these numbers at the moment. I don't want to... but I'm going to go through each of their characters and do the math and set up their attacks with the bonuses added in (this was a little slowdown) for hit and damage. I just recall the ranger had a 20 or so before he got...

3 Strikers and a Controller - Tactical Advice?

Oh, they just hit level 3 last session. The rogue doesn't want to take armor that will penalize his skills. The ranger has better armor. He's not Sir Sneaksalot. He's Sir Shooty.

3 Strikers and a Controller - Tactical Advice?

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure why. Two players screwed up the skills and weren't counting their +5 bonus ("i'll add it in on my own when I roll the skill" - only they kept forgetting it. I had to MAKE them factor in the bonus) so maybe he's missing something on his AC. 10 (Base) +...

3 Strikers and a Controller - Tactical Advice?

We have: Elf Ranger (AC of like 23) Half Elf Warlock (AC 13) Tiefling Rogue (AC 15) Eladrin Wizard (AC 14) The ranger is Ranged. The rogue is mostly melee. The Wiz & War are both ranged. What it comes down to in a wide open area, the Ranger is off to the side shooting and everyone else...
