D&D General How Did You Generate Your Most Recent Character's Stats?

    This is a cool setup I haven't seen before. Theoretically, an 18, 18, 17, 17, 16, 15 is the highest possible if you allow a total bonus of +19. On the flip side 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9 has a total of -10 if you're a masochist. 5e's standard array of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 comes in at +5, but would need...

D&D General Friday Nonsense: Add One Stat To D&D (For PCs)

Preparedness: write down the items you have that matter to you. Weapons, potions, heirlooms, and other stuff like that. Torches, flint, extra pouches, soap, mirror, rope, and other common items that spend 99% of their time in your pack? Just make a Prep roll to see if you have the item in...

D&D General What are the issues with the 2014 Subclasses

I don't think every class should have the same levels where subclass abilities come online. But I do think every class should have subclass abilities at levels 1 and 3. After that you can fit them in as you please. Features that let you use caster stat in place of strength and dexterity for...

    General video game discussion

I played FFXII again. First replay since it came out. Still really good and playing the Zodiac Age version made this time was a nice change. Now I'm working my way through the end game content of Expedition 33. I really enjoy how combat manages to stay fresh 50+ hours into the game. And it's...

    New "Stargate" series announced

"Get Ready. We're heading through the gate one more time. Chevron 8 is locked." -Joseph Mallozzi The 8th chevron is used to dial outside of a galaxy. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the show takes place in another galaxy similar to SG:A being in the Pegasus galaxy.

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a Better Ankheg

I remember hunting ankhegs in BG1 because their shells could be crafted into really good armor. Upping their AC to reflect that is a start. Giving them an ambush ability with bonus to initiative and advantage on attacks when they pop out of the ground would be cool. Claw attack is a good addition.

D&D 5E (2014) Two wizard homebrew mechanics: any unintended consequences?

Updated: -"X Savant" let's you prep up to wizard level spells from your chosen school. Effectively the same as a 5e wizard. Also, we use a few divination spells from 3rd parties to ensure divination wizard have more than 20 spells to choose from. -"Book Casting" is limited to 1 use and...

D&D 5E (2014) Two wizard homebrew mechanics: any unintended consequences?

I don't mind if they fail a few times before succeeding at book casting. The idea was to give some utility with enough of an action economy cost that it's probably not worth it in combat or fast enough for split second decisions. But it sounds like a use limit is needed. I figured as much but...

D&D 5E (2014) Two wizard homebrew mechanics: any unintended consequences?

Marked as 5e 2014, but if you see anything that applies to 5e 2024 feel free to include it. I've got two mechanical changes for wizards that I like. I'm putting this out there incase anyone can think of anything that would make these changes broken. 1. Spell Prep At 1st level wizards are able...

D&D General Making Spellcasters feel Caster-y without actually Casting?

This reminds me of a funny homebrew item. The dimension 20 show misfits & magic used the kids on brooms rules for their game. Whenever you used magic you rolled the appropriate die and a d4. The system uses exploding dice so that d4 was really handy. Anyway, they would use the term "do magic...

D&D General Making Spellcasters feel Caster-y without actually Casting?

I think warlocks with their pact magic/boons and invocations are probably the closest thing to this idea in 5e. Slots are way more limited, while invocations and boons are quite magical without being a spell (most of the time). After the warlock I would point to many of the subclass features...

    D&D 5E (2014) "You Can Do 3 Things" - My Nephew's D&D Houserule

I think I would just change extra attack to extra die of damage if I used this house rule. It's cool that their experimenting with the rules.

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

At times it can be. I used Control Water with a cleric to take an entire ship out of combat with a Cleric one time. Any wizard or druid could do the same if they're 7th level or higher. While I've never seen it I've heard a similar thing happened in a season of CR (at least I think it was CR).

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

For ship actions I think it's more fun for the players to do group rolls. Either additive against higher than normal DCs, average or median roll, or count successes. One way I saw it handled in another system was the player(s) can use their character abilities to aid a group roll only for their...
