It was published in 1997 by TSR. It was branded as a TSR product because that's when it was initially developed.
Wizards of the Coast bought TSR in 1997 as well.
That means all the players handbooks at GM guide, and a handful of products still were made under the TSR tenure.
Ryan Dancey had a great letter re: the WotC purchase of TSR. If there were pallets of books, not specifically mentioned, but I would wager Alternity was part of that. TSR was a hot mess.

Alternity wasn't specifically killed because of Star Wars at all. It was dropped because of seriously lagging sales and failed to gain a lot of traction.

I hope the new Dark Conspiracy RPG uses the Traveller 2e system.
That would happily replace the Dark Matter and Star*Drive material for me.
I would still like a different far future setting aside from Traveller with different aliens, etc.

I wanted to like Alternity, I tried so hard. Bought and sold it about 3-4 times. There are a handful of things that didn't work for me, surprisingly it was NOT the roll low and the modifier dice. I really liked that feature.
