D&D 5E Everyone Starts at First Level

    Thanks. I read everyone's posts in Billy's voice. :)

D&D 5E Everyone Starts at First Level

I realized that about ten seconds after I posted. However, Bilbo wasn't a farmer either. ;)

Frodo was a farmer? I thought he was a dilletante-in-training.

D&D 5E Everyone Starts at First Level

Fair enough. But it seems to be a rare opportunity where you could accommodate two different playstyles at the same time. Players who like to play fresh-from-the-farm types up against long odds could start at level 1, and players who prefer to play competent characters from the get-go could...

D&D 5E Everyone Starts at First Level

Why is it DM choice and not player/table choice? I can see the benefits of starting a new character at 1st level, and the benefits of starting a new character close to or at the level of the current party members, but why not simply ask the player which they'd prefer?

TSR [Let's Read] Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rules, by Tom Moldvay

Rolling all the dice This reminds me of the beginning of the Guardians of the Flame series, when Karl Cullinane is musing about how when they played [D&D], the gamemaster rolled all the dice, and he could just focus on imagining himself being there. Maybe hiding the crunch behind the DM screen...

TSR [Let's Read] Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rules, by Tom Moldvay

Great thread! This is a great thread! Iosue, you do a wonderful job capturing the items the "magenta box" does well and not-so-well. One question for you: Do you think folks' willingness to play fast and loose with the rules is a feature of the game, or a feature of the age folks were when...

Why did Invisibility get the shaft?

Well at least now I know it wasn't just a typo. It's bad enough that you can detect the presence (though not the exact location) of an invisible creature by rolling a spot check. I'd love to hear an explanation of that one. And then there's this. If you are simply invisible, the DC to spot...

Why did Invisibility get the shaft?

Just noticed that Invisibility 3.5 has a duration of 1 min./level. Invisibility 3.0 had a duration of 10 min./level. Anyone know the reason for the change? Just curious. Greyline

Scarred Lands: Ask the Sage [Version 3.65729 with Upgrades!]

Just looking for some advice. My players have just had their second encounter with someone who I hope will become a recurring nemesis--he's a cleric of Chardun with the War and Domination domains. Now while they wisely chose to run away before he could act, how do I unveil his ability to...

    Vicious Weapons and "Disruptive" Energy

According to the DMG 3.5, p.226 So the question is, what is "disruptive energy?" Is this some new kind of energy to add to the list of acid, cold, electricity, fire, and sonic? Is resist elements effective against it? Or is it simply another name for negative energy (this would be my vote...

Weapon-a-Week: Bec de Corbin, Earspoon & Lucern Hammer.

These are great! The parrying dagger's bonus offsets the penalty for its being a light weapon. Makes for a good pick-up for two-weapon wielders. The sword breaker still won't break anything other than a kukri, dagger or sickle as written unless you have a strength bonus. Not sure that's a...

    ideas for white necromancer

Check out the Hollowfaust sourcebook from Sword and Sorcery Studios--it's probably the best of their soft-cover supplements. It has a ton of great ideas for necromancers: Animators (masters of corporeal undead--mainly zombies and skeletons), Mourners (necromantic bards), and Speakers of the...

    Protection from Evil curiosity

Take comfort die_kluge, if nothing else, you've enabled some useful debate. As a related question to the matter at hand, are evil and [Evil] the same thing? That is, when a spell description states the spell works against evil creatures, does that mean any creature of lawful evil, neutral...

    Best...Puzzle...Ever....

These puzzles are great, but for some puzzles with more of an adventure feel to them, try and find a copy of Palladium's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures--the Death Traps scenario has six puzzle/riddle rooms in it. You either solve the puzzle, or you die. Years back, we got through 3 of...
