News Digest for the Week of April 2

Well, one of the more UNSPEAKABLY CRUEL japes over on Birdhell was this pristine bit of emotional savagery from https://twitter.com/laura_hirsb, which made me sad.

Thank You! EN World Still Growing After 20 Years!

Holy crap, I've been coming here for twenty years. That's just madness. Anyway, you're welcome, Russ. Thanks for keeping the place running!

D&D comes to Middle Earth (from Cubicle 7)

Now this has serious potential for my crew. We ran through The Marsh Bell a couple of years ago, and what made most of my players bounce off the One Ring system was the combat system. Too far from their gaming preferences, really; so if I can run TOR with a combat system they're more comfortable...

[UPDATED AGAIN!] CURSE OF STRAHD Will Be Available March 15th

If you go to http://dnd.wizards.com/search/site/strahd you get a couple of semi-phantom page refs. The links don't work right, but the previews say Looks like somebody didn't delete all the stuff when they changed their minds about when it got announced.

Your most anticipated games of 2016?

Mage: the Awakening 2nd Edition, and (fingers crossed so hard they're turning blue) Scion 2nd Edition. (edit for) Oh hey, and Zweihander and Delta Green, too!

    D&D 5E Designing a fantasy army in 5th

Yeah, I think people underestimate how much damage can get done by a small team of mid-level PCs when they have the drop on their target, and the good sense to book it before their enemy gets their shizz together. And all it woulda taken was a couple of bad rolls on the players side to end up...

Hunh. Weird, just reloaded the page, and the button's there now. OK, never mind.

    EN World EN5ider Has Launched!

Technical Note: the Archery Contests article seems to be missing the download button. The other three articles had one, but there seems to be no way to acquire the Archery article. Pledged $3 an article, capped at $6, coz I'm broke like a broken thing, but heck if I'm not gonna support the only...

    D&D 5E Improved Find Familiar

But how's that different from any other caster with access to Find Familiar? The only bump chain-lock gets is that their familiar can be a pseudo-dragon, an imp, a quasit, or a sprite. And until this edition, every one of those options (except for the sprite) was available to wizards. So they've...

    D&D 5E Improved Find Familiar

I wouldn't say you're ruining the Warlock as a class; you're just evaporating one of the three specialties. In my experience, chain-lock's the specialty that absolutely nobody ever takes. So there's no point in reserving the concept of more powerful familiars to a class specialty that's never...

    D&D 5E Improved Find Familiar

Thing is, tome-lock already ate the chain-lock's lunch. At this point, I'd be inclined to just let the chain-lock vanish in a puff of irrelevance and just expand the familiar options for everybody.

    D&D 5E Improved Find Familiar

Well, the problem is that Pact of the Chain is seriously gimped. There's no reason that a regular wizard couldn't cast Find Familiar in a higher level slot to get a more powerful familiar, and there's no reason that a tome-pact warlock with Book of Ancient Secrets couldn't scribe Find Familiar...

    D&D 5E Semi-sandbox product I'd love to see

See, what I'd like to get is an urban sandbox setting. Same basic idea, but for folks that want to do urban adventuring instead of woodsrunning frontier-life adventuring. Lots of intrigue-based adventures, house-breaking and roof-running, sewer crawls after were-rats and urban goblins, street...
