In regards to why people didn't go after the drowning woman - I think Jack says it pretty clearly towards the end of the episode. He comes back from the jungle and states that everyone needs to stop thinking for themselves. That it's obvious that they're going to be on the island for a while...

I am the wife of KnowTheToe and I have NO idea how I got talked into this one!!! Midnight showing...what am I freakin NUTS!!! I'm no spring chicken anymore, and work the next day will be very very very long....no more sick days left and no caffine is allowed. :rolleyes: 13 1/2 hours to go....
