I would look on the dropping of these half-bloods favourably. As previous posters have suggested there are ways of playing human characters with a touch of the woods or a touch of the tusk which would work far better mechanically and probably have a better feel to them.
I was looking at the previews/excerpts from the Rules Compendium and while I'm trying to resist the urge to buy it I was impressed with the clarity of the page layout.
I seem to remember someone at WotC saying something about them going for a more magazine-like layout for 4e and whilst I wonder...
