    Looking for a magic system

Fantasy Craft does almost all of this out of the box. - Spellcasting is a special case of the skill rules, with DC being determined by the highest of the spell's level or the target's defenses )Defense and Spell Resistance). - All the Spell Conversion (ie, Metamagic) feats have a make the spell...

    Help Me Find a System

A little late, but I'm a big fan of Fantasy Craft by Crafty Games. It's designed by the same folks who did Spycraft. It's a d20 based (but you should forget 3.X and Pathfinder). Classes are different and well balanced from aa spotlight sharing perspective, but no one is worthless in any given...

"Exclusive deals suck!" - James Mathe's rant about the tabletop industry

Also, in most jurisdictions liquor licenses are limited in number and ludicrously valuable. Five or six figures valuable. They're the single most valuable asset of almost every restaurant that has one in my neck of the woods.

What is in your basic adventuring kit?

Most of my games are not the sort that involve that sort of dungeoneering so equipment mostly amounts to arms and armor, tools needed to do your job and stuff related to flavor and back story. That said, for those in games where matters you guys forgot: Twine/String/Cord Chalk/Charcoal sticks...

    Future-Based Game Advice Needed

Well, depending on how much work you want to avoid, Mekton Z might work for you. It's primarily aimed for at the giant robot genre, but MTS cover all sorts of stuff. It's relatively light weight, there's actually three different combat systems depending on the level of speed and abstraction you...

    What is "gamist"?

Because they used it first. Don't move the goal posts. You claimed he got to define the word because he made it up. You were wrong. In my experience you write a critical theory, that is a theory of criticism, because you're a pretentious twit who can't get a real job in business, government...

    What is "gamist"?

Wrong tool. Try Google Groups and look at rec.games.frp.advocacy. Thousands of hits from the late 1990s, using the term gamist the way I and others use it. Before Edwards started redefining it as part of his pseudo-intellectual claptrap. Edwards was aware of these discussions, he just decided...

    What is "gamist"?

Somewhere on The Forge. Just follow the lunacy and turn left at the Shoggoth. If memory serves it only costs $5. And a soul. Can't remember if it has to be your soul or not.

    What is "gamist"?

Funny, I think Edwards shouldn't have tried to redefine terms that were in use and had existing natural language meaning into something that only makes sense if you buy his pamphlet. *shrug*

    What is "gamist"?

When I use the term it's from the meanings I learned before Edwards and the Forgies started redefining them for their silly theory shenanigans. Gamist: Focused on being a game. Mechanics and play are often strong abstractions, condensing many different elements into simple mechanics. Not...

    Looking for a System...

Fantasy Craft and Spycraft 2.0 are reasonably compatible. They have differences to account for, but they could work if you like d20 and M&M's too much a departure from class/level for you.

    Actual functional weapons

The War Scythe was a common improvised pole weapon. It was popular with peasant uprisings and levies since the base materials (a scythe) and the equipment and skill to make them (a blacksmith and some extra metal) were common. They look like a fauchard though.

Novels with extensive D&D-style ruin/dungeon exploration?

The second book in Rick Cook's Wizardy series has a wizard (for sufficiently broad definitions of wizard) trapped and hunted in a ruined city. The plot won't track well if you didn't read the first one, and the whole series is loading with programing jokes (trust me, they're not out of place)...
